Members of Great Andamanese tribe recover from Covid-19

  • All the members of the Great Andamanese tribe, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) who had tested COVID-19 positive on the Andaman Islands, have recovered.
  • Officials said any person visiting the Strait island, where most of the members of the tribe reside, is being tested for the infection. The number of the members of the Great Andamanese tribe stands at 74.
  • Tests for infection have also been carried out among the members of the Jarwa and the Onge community. The five PVTGS residing in the Andamans are Great Andamenese, Jarwas, Onges, Shompens, and North Sentinelese. Testing for members of the Shompen and North Sentinelese, who live in isolation, is difficult.

India-China agree on five point plan to resolve border disputes

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said they had agreed on a five-point course of action to de-escalate the four-month-long standoff between troops at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • The five-point plan includes abiding by the consensus between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping to “not allow differences to become disputes”, quick disengagement to ease tensions.
  • It is understood that the military commanders’ meeting in the next few days will chalk out steps of disengagement more clearly, which the Foreign Ministers will review before deciding on the course ahead.

Low intensity earthquakes hit Palghar

  • Eight low-intensity earthquakes in the range of 2.2 to 3.6 magnitude were recorded in Palghar district of Maharashtra within four hours.
  • Two tehsils have been experiencing low-intensity earthquakes over the last few days. Four such quakes had been recorded. One of them was of 4.0 magnitude.
  • Disaster coordination committees have been formed at the village level and the civil defence staff has been asked to remain prepared for assistance. Mock drills have been carried out in the villages to make people aware.

Tamil comedian Vadivel Balaji passes away

  • Popular actor Vadivel Balaji, known for his mimicry and imitating the body language of famous comedian Vadivelu, passed away in Chennai.
  • The comedian was apparently paralyzed following the attack and had been under treatment for the past 15 days.
  • Though he made his television debut with 'Kalaka Povadhu Yaaru', he became popular with the game show 'Adhu Idhu Edhu' hosted by Sivakarthikeyan.
  • He was known to make the guests laugh single-handedly, while the rest of the participants mostly worked in pairs or as a team to make the guest laugh.

Game of Thrones actress Diana Rigg dies

  • English actor Diana Rigg, who was known for her role in famous TV series and movies, has died at the age of 82.
  • Diana Rigg, known for playing the role of Olenna Tyrell in HBO’s Game of Thrones, rose to fame by playing Emma Peel in the 1960s British espionage TV series The Avengers.
  • Her work in the series got her the role of the main Bond girl Tracy di Vicenzo in the movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, opposite none other than Sean Connery. Her character was the first one to marry Connery’s fictional spy.
