NCPCR survey wants all Madrasas under RTE

  • The National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has recommended to the government to bring all such schools, including madarasas, under the purview of Right to Education and SarvaShiksha Abhiyan campaign.
  • The NCPCR also backed reservation for students from minority communities in such schools after its survey found a large proportion of non-minority students studying there.
  • The report titled “Impact of Exemption under Article 15 (5) with regards to Article 21A of the Constitution of India on Education of Minority Communities’’ states that it was also found that the largest number of out-of-school children – at 1.1 crore – belonged to the Muslim community.

Vinesh Phogat handed temporary suspension

  • The Wrestling Federation of India temporarily suspended Vinesh Phogat following her return from Tokyo Olympics campaign.
  • The WFI cited indiscipline from Vinesh at the Games as the star wrestler is believed to have refused to train with the rest of the athletes at the Olympics Village.
  • She also did not wear the name of the official kit sponsors of Team India at the Olympics. Vinesh has been given time till August 16 to reply to the notice that mentioned indiscipline on three counts.

India asks its citizens to leave Afghanistan

  • India advised its nationals in Afghanistan to make immediate arrangements to return home, even as it began the process of evacuating its officials and citizens from Mazar-e-Sharif.
  • A security advisory called on Indians to make travel arrangements before commercial air services are discontinued.
  • It also asked Indian firms operating in Afghanistan to immediately withdraw Indian employees from project sites before air services get affected.
  • The move came exactly a month after India evacuated some 50 officials and security personnel from the consulate in the southern city of Kandahar.

Lionel Messi inks deal with PSG

  • Argentina forward Lionel Messi, who left Barcelona after 21 years last week, has signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, with the option of an additional year.
  • Messi, 34, will wear the number 30, the number he had when he began his professional career at Barca.
  • While PSG had to pay 222 million euros (then $261m) to sign Neymar from Barcelona in 2017, there was no transfer fee for Messi.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo resigns

  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned from his post over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations.
  • The decision came after New York's attorney general released the results of an investigation that found Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women.
  • Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a 62-year-old Democrat and former member of Congress from the Buffalo area, will become the State’s 57th Governor and the first woman to hold the post.
