Indian bowler Pankaj Singh retires

  • India fast bowler Pankaj Singh has announced his retirement from cricket. The right-handed pacer has been regular in domestic cricket, turning out for Rajasthan till 2018 before switching to Puducherry.
  • Singh has two Test wickets to his name. In his only ODI for India, Pankaj gave away 45 runs without picking up a wicket.
  • Pankaj has also played 17 Indian Premier League matches while picking up 11 wickets at an average of 42.55. Pankaj represented the franchises of Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in his brief IPL career.

Taliban claims 85 percent control over Afghanistan

  • The Taliban claimed to be in control of 85 percent of Afghanistan, including a key border crossing with Iran, following a sweeping offensive launched as US troops pull out of the war-torn nation.
  • Hours after President Joe Biden issued a staunch defence of the US withdrawal, the Taliban said fighters had seized the border town of Islam Qala – completing an arc of territory from the Iranian border to the frontier with China.
  • The Afghan government has repeatedly dismissed the Taliban's gains as having little strategic value, but the seizure of multiple border crossings along with mineral-rich areas will likely fill the group's coffers with several sources of new revenue.

Hackers hit Iran’s railroad system

  • Iran’s railroad system came under cyberattack with hackers posting fake messages about train delays or cancellations on display boards at stations across the country.
  • The hackers posted messages such as “long delayed because of cyberattack” or “cancelled” on the boards. They also urged passengers to call for information, listing the phone number of the office of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
  • The hack led to “unprecedented chaos” at rail stations. No group took responsibility. Trains across Iran had lost their electronic tracking system. It wasn’t immediately clear if that was also part of the cyberattack.

Himalayan Yaks to be insured

  • The high-altitude yak, feeling the climate change heat across the Himalayan belt, will now be insured.
  • The National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) at Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district has tied up with the National Insurance Company Ltd. for insuring their livestock.
  • The insurance policy will shield the yak owners against the risks posed by weather calamities, diseases, in-transit mishaps, surgical operations and strikes or riots.
  • The total yak population in India is about 58,000. The Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir have some 26,000, followed by 24,000 in Arunachal Pradesh, 5,000 in Sikkim, 2,000 in Himachal Pradesh and about 1,000 in West Bengal and Uttarakhand.

Eric Garcetti appointed as US envoy to India

  • U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as his ambassador to India. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Garcettiwould replace Kenneth Juster.
  • Garcetti has been the Mayor of the City of Los Angeles since 2013, following 12 years as a member of the City Council, including six as Council President.
  • He led LA’s successful bid to return the summer Olympic Games to American soil for the first time in three decades.
  • During 12 years as an Intelligence Officer in the US Navy Reserve Component, Mr. Garcetti served under the Commander, US Pacific Fleet and the Defence Intelligence Agency, retiring in 2017 as a Lieutenant.
