Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli loses vote of confidence

  • Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli lost a trust vote in the House of Representatives after the CPN (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpakamal Dahal withdrew support to his government.
  • Prime Minister Oli secured 93 votes in the lower house of parliament during a special session convened on the directives of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
  • Oli required at least 136 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives to win the confidence motion as four members are currently under suspension.

WHO classifies Indian virus strain as 'variant of concern’

  • The Indian B-1617 variant of coronavirus has been classified as a “variant of concern” at the global level by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • The UN health agency said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19 first found in India last October seemed to be transmitting more easily than the original version of the virus, and might possibly have some increased resistance to vaccine protections.
  • They are seen as more dangerous than the original version of the virus by being more transmissible, deadly or able to get past vaccine protection.
  • It has for some time been feared that B.1.617 might be contributing to the alarming spread.

Veteran Kerala politician Gouri Amma passes away

  • KR Gouri Amma, one of the tallest leaders of Kerala politics died on May 11in Thiruvananthapuram.She was 102.
  • Gouri Amma participated in trade union and peasant movements. She stood with the CPI(M) post the split of the Communist party in 1964.
  • She was the longest-serving MLAs of the state after KM Mani of Kerala Congress (M). Gouri Amma was an MLA 13 times, representing the Arur Assembly constituency from 1957 onwards.

Iran and Saudi Arabia hold secret talks

  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry for the first time confirmed the Islamic republic is holding talks with regional rival Saudi Arabia.
  • Reports revealed that Iranian and Saudi officials met in Baghdad in April, their first high-level meeting since Riyadh cut diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2016.
  • The neighbouring countries cut ties in 2016 after Iranian protestors attacked Saudi diplomatic missions following the kingdom’s execution of a revered Shiite cleric.
  • The regional rivals have backed opposite sides of several regional conflicts, from Syria to Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting the Houthi rebels.

Bangladesh opts for Chinese vaccine

  • Bangladesh will receive a major consignment of China-made vaccine doses for the pandemic. This will be the first time that Bangladesh will receive the Chinese vaccine in such a large quantity since the beginning of the pandemic.
  • Bangladesh and China have been in dialogue on vaccine for COVID-19 from the beginning of the pandemic but differences had grown over the funding of the vaccine last year.
  • Dhaka began sourcing Covishield vaccine from Pune’s Serum Institute of India earlier this year but had to diversify for Sinopharm as the SII has delayed the delivery of at least two million doses that Bangladesh has already purchased from the vaccine manufacturer.
