Earth-like planet Gliese 486B discovered

  • Scientists have just discovered a giant super Earth-like planet at a distance of 26 light-years away from the Earth. The newly found planet has been named Gliese 486 b.
  • This new planet Gliese 486 b rocky exoplanet, is in orbit around a dim red dwarf star at a distance of 26 light-years from Earth.
  • The planet is 1.3 times larger than the Earth and has about 2.8 more mass than the Earth. Gliese 486 b makes one rotation around the host star every 1.47 earth days.
  • This newly discovered planet provides a lot of opportunities for scientists to study the atmospheres of Earth-like rocky planets.

Vivo back as title sponsor for IPL

  • Chinese smartphone company Vivo has returned as the title sponsor of the Indian Premium League cricket tournament, almost a year after the sponsorship deal with the BCCI was suspended amid the India-China border standoff.
  • Vivo’s sponsorship deal with the BCCI was worth ? 440 crore per year but was suspended last season due to the India-China border standoff.
  • Vivo had won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of ? 2,190 crore. It will now be the title sponsor till 2023.
  • Dream11 had been the IPL title sponsors for the 2020 edition, winning the rights for ? 222 crore. The matches were played in the UAE in view of the pandemic.

India’s largest floating solar plant to be commissioned soon

  • India’s largest floating solar power plant of 100 MW capacity is expected to be commissioned at Ramagundam in May this year.
  • the floating solar photo-voltaic project would be spread over 450 acres on the water surface of Sri Ram Sagar Project reservoir.
  • This will be the largest floating solar plant in the country in a single location as of now. The project has been developed by National Thermal Power Corporation.

INS Karanj inducted into Indian Navy

  • The Navy has inducted the third Scorpene-class conventional diesel-electric submarine, INS Karanj, into service.
  • Six Scorpene submarines are being built under Project-75 by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), Mumbai, under technology transfer from Naval Group of France.
  • The first submarine of the class, INS Kalvari, was commissioned in December 2017 and the second, INS Khanderi, in September 2019. The fourth, Vela, was launched into the water in May 2019 and the fifth, Vagir, in November 2020.

World’s fastest supercomputer ready for use

  • The world’s most powerful supercomputer Fugaku of Japan is now fully developed and is available for research use.
  • Japanese scientific research institute RIKEN and Fujitsu began development six years ago with an aim to make the device core of Japan’s computing infrastructure.
  • Fugaku has topped the Top500 list, a supercomputer benchmark index, for two consecutive years.
  • The computer has 100 times the application performance of K supercomputer and is developed to implement high-resolution, long-duration and large-scale simulations.
