Comedian Bob Saget passes away

  • Bob Saget, who was best known for the role of Danny Tanner in the sitcom Full House, passed away. He was 65.
  • The comedian was reportedly found dead in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, following a performance.
  • Beyond the iconic situational comedy, Saget also hosted Americas Funniest Home Videos and was the narrator in the CBS hit show How I Met Your Mother.

  • Detained Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to another four years in prison, the second round of verdicts against the ousted civilian leader.
  • The Nobel prize winner was found guilty of multiple charges that include possession of unlicensed walkie-talkies.
  • Suu Kyiwas Myanmar`s state counsellor and de facto leader of the country before she was ousted and detained by the military in a coup 11 months ago.

US surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient

  • In a medical first, doctors transplanted a pig heart into a patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life through highly experimental surgery.
  • It marks a step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants.
  • The transplant showed that a heart from a genetically modified animal can function in the human body without immediate rejection.
  • The patient knew there was no guarantee the experiment would work but he was dying, ineligible for a human heart transplant and had no other option.

Vodafone Idea approves deal to convert debt into equity

  • Debt-ridden Vodafone Idea (VIL) has decided to opt for converting about Rs 16,000 crore interest dues liability payable to the government into equity which will amount to around 35.8 per cent stake in the company.
  • If the plan goes through, then the government will become one of the biggest shareholders in the company which is reeling under a debt burden of about Rs 1.95 lakh crore.
  • The government will hold around 35.8 per cent of the total outstanding shares of the company, and that the promoter shareholders would hold around 28.5 per cent (Vodafone Group) and around 17.8 per cent (Aditya Birla Group), respectively.
