US House to consider impeaching Trump

  • The U.S House of Representatives plans to vote on a resolution to ask Vice- President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, a statute by which the President Donald Trump can be removed on grounds of incapacitation.
  • This comes days after Mr. Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol building. If Mr. Pence does not invoke the statute, the House will consider impeaching.
  • There are 10 days left in Mr. Trump’s term and if impeached he will the first President to be impeached twice. If convicted in the Senate, Mr. Trump could be barred from running for office again in the future.

Chinese soldier handed back to PLA

  • The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier who was apprehended in Eastern Ladakh was handed back to China.
  • The PLA soldier was apprehended on the early hours of January 8 after he transgressed across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), south of Pangong Tso lake in Eastern Ladakh.
  • As a procedure in such circumstances, there was interrogation on the circumstances of the crossing and also medical examination before the handover.
  • Since the beginning of the standoff in early May, there has been massive deployment of troops and equipment along the disputed boundary in Eastern Ladakh and also along the LAC.

Delhi becomes ninth state to confirm Bird flu

  • Delhi has become the ninth state to confirm cases of bird flu amid concerns over the spread of the disease in several states.
  • The famous Sanjay Lake in the national capital was declared "alert zone" after 17 more ducks were found dead there. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has already closed the water body-cum-park.
  • Bird flu is a viral infection that can infect not only birds, but also humans and other animals. Most forms of the virus are restricted to birds. H5N1 is the most common form of bird flu.

Umesh Kushwaha named Bihar JD(U) president

  • Former MLA Umesh Kushwaha was unanimously elected as Bihar unit president of the ruling Janata Dal (United).
  • Kushwaha replaced Bashishtha Narayan Singh, party’s state president, and Rajya Sabha member. Kushwaha is a former JD(U) MLA from Mahnar assembly constituency in Vaishali district.
  • Kushwaha contested the 2020 assembly elections on JD(U) ticket from Mahnar constituency but lost to the RJD candidate Mrs Veena Singh.

Lithium reserves discovered in Karnataka

  • Preliminary surveys by the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) have shown the presence of 1,600 tonnes of lithium resources in the igneous rocks of the Marlagalla-Allapatna region of Karnataka’s Mandya district.
  • The find in Mandya is extremely small in quantitative terms, but it marks some initial success in the attempt to domestically mine the metal by way of hard-rock extraction of the ore. India currently imports all its lithium needs.
  • The domestic exploration push also includes exploratory work to extract lithium from the brine pools of Rajasthan and Gujarat and the mica belts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
  • Currently, Bolivia (21 million tonnes), Argentina (17 million tonnes), Australia (6.3 million tonnes), and China (4.5 million tonnes) are largest producers of the metal.
