Oman's sultan Qaboos dies

  • Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, the Arab world's longest-serving ruler, has died aged 79.
  • The sultan deposed his father in a bloodless coup with British support in 1970 and set Oman on a path to development, using its oil wealth.
  • His cousin Haitham bin Tariq Al Said has been sworn in as his successor.
  • The sultan is the paramount decision-maker in Oman. He also holds the positions of prime minister, supreme commander of the armed forces, minister of defence, minister of finance and minister of foreign affairs.

Chinese paddlefish declared extinct

  • A team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences in Wuhan, China has declared the Chinese paddlefish (Psephurus gladius) as extinct.
  • The fish was a very large freshwater fish and were on average 10 feet in length. They got their name from their large, protruding snout. They lived in the Yangtze River and its tributaries in China.
  • The Yangtze, Asia's largest river, originates in an eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau and meanders westward for 6,300 kilometres before finally meeting the East China Sea at Shanghai. 

Maradu flats demolished

  • In a first such implosion in the country of this dimension, two luxury waterfront high-rises in the Maradu district of Kochi city were razed to ground.
  • This has happened, four months after the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of four multi-storey illegal apartment complexes at Maradu.
  • The apex court had ordered its demolition by September 20 for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone rules.

Madhavpur mela

  • The art, culture, cuisines, handicrafts and handlooms of the North-eastern region will be showcased at the ''MadhavpurMela'' to be held in Gujarat in April.
  • This will mark the cultural integration of Gujarat with the Northeast under the ''Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat''.
  • Madhavpur Ghed, a small but culturally significant village, is the place where, according to folklore, Lord Krishna married Rukmini, the daughter of King Bhishmaka.
  • This event is commemorated by a cultural fair held every year, commencing on Ram Navami.

Iran admits to accidentally shooting Ukrainian passenger plane

  • Iran has admitted it unintentionally shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane hours after the country had launched ballistic missiles at Iraqi bases hosting U.S. troops.
  • Officials blamed "human error" for taking down the jet and killing all 176 people aboard.
  • Iran had previously denied shooting down the flight shortly after it took off from Tehran.
  • Prior to Iran's admission Saturday, U.S. intelligence officials had evidence that the Boeing 737 was shot down by an Iranian missile by mistake.
