Exercise lowers mortality risks in women

  • Women who exercise vigorously are at significantly lower risk of dying from heart disease, cancer and other causes, reveals a new study.
  • The annual rate of death from cardiovascular disease was nearly four times higher in women with poor, compared to good, exercise capacity.
  • Annual cancer deaths were doubled in patients with poor, compared to good, exercise capacity.
  • The annual rate of death from other causes was more than four times higher in those with poor, compared to good, exercise capacity.

Technique to keep medical tools free from pathogens

  • A new study can spot and remove pathogens such as Candida albicans, a commonly found microbe that can turn deadly when it colonises on medical devices such as catheters implanted in the human body.
  • The microbe forms a biofilm when it colonises using a source of infection. It then spreads into the bloodstream to infect internal organs.
  • A biosensor to detect early stages of colonisation would be highly beneficial for treating it with anti-fungal drugs successfully.

US House panel considers sanctions against Amit Shah

  • The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has stated it is against Citizenship Amendment Bill’s religion criterion and the US government should consider sanctions against Union Home Minister Amit Shah if the Bill is passed by the Upper House..
  • The CAB enshrines a pathway to citizenship for immigrants that specifically excludes Muslims, setting a legal criterion for citizenship based on religion.
  • According to the proposed legislation, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, till December 31, 2014, facing religious persecution there, will not be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship. The bill ignores Muslims.

Steam locomotive runs for the first time in two decades

  • For the first time in two decades, a steam locomotive was operated in a commercial capacity along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) section between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam railway stations.
  • Over the last two decades, the oil-fired steam locomotives were operated only between Mettupalayam and Coonoor and not till Udhagamandalam. Diesel locomotives were used to complete the final leg of the journey between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam.
  • The trip is a part of chartered heritage train services introduced by the Indian railways to get the tourists experience the train journey on heritage routes.
