Sanjay Gupta appointed country manager of google India

  • Google India has said it has appointed Sanjay Gupta as its new country manager and vice-president of sales and operations for India.
  • Gupta, the former Star and Disney India managing director, will contribute to Google’s efforts to expand the internet ecosystem in the country.
  • He replaces Rajan Anandan, who left Google to join Sequoia Capital India.

Down syndrome may result in Arthritis

  • A recent study suggests that a child with Down syndrome remains at a higher risk of an associated form of arthritis.
  • About one child in every 1,000 develops some type of chronic arthritis. These disorders can affect children at any age, although rarely in the first six months of life.
  • Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome number 21, which affects how the body and brain develop.

Global warming causing emergence of new virus

  • Decline of ice in the Arctic sea due to global warming can lead to the emergence of a deadly virus that could threaten marine life in the North Pacific, says a recent study.
  • Phocine distemper virus (PDV), a pathogen responsible for killing thousands of European harbour seals in the North Atlantic in 2002, was identified in northern sea otters in Alaska in 2004, raising questions about when and how the virus reached them.
  • The 15-year study highlights how the radical reshaping of historic sea ice may have opened pathways for contact between Arctic and sub-Arctic seals that was previously impossible.
    This allowed for the virus' introduction into the Northern Pacific Ocean.

Tejaswini Sawant qualifies for Olympics

  • Tejaswini Sawant secured India's 12th Olympic quota in shooting by qualifying for the final of the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event at the 14th Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar.
  • Sawant, who also competes in the 50m rifle prone, has won many medals, including gold at the World Championship, World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.
  • In 2010, she became the world champion in the 50m rifle prone event in Munich. She was the first Indian woman shooter to win a gold medal at the Worlds.

Shafali Verma becomes youngest Indian cricketer to score international fifty

  • She achieved this feat during 1st T20 International between India and West Indies. She surpassed cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar's 30 year old record during her achievement.
