Stressed pregnancy can effect brain development

  • Researchers have found evidence for the impaired development of a white matter tract, in babies whose mothers experience more stress in the prenatal period.
  • Researchers used a medical imaging technique called diffusion tensor imaging that was specifically developed to look at the structure of the white matter.
  • There is also evidence to suggest that if mothers experience poor mental health during pregnancy, it leads to adverse outcomes in the baby  like obstetric outcomes, lower birth weight or premature birth.

Moody cuts India’s growth rate

  • Moody’s Investors Service has cut India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for 2019-20 to 5.8% from the earlier estimate of 6.2%.
  • It attributed the deceleration to an investment-led slowdown that has broadened into consumption, due to financial stress among rural households and weak job creation.
  • The firm expects growth to pick up to 6.6% in FY21 and around 7% over the medium term.

SBI cuts savings rate

  • The State Bank of India has reduced the interest rate on savings bank account with a balance below ? 1 lakh by 25 basis points to just 3.25%, its lowest ever.
  • The bank aims to reduce the deposit amount kept by citizens and instead nudge them to spend it, so that it can boost demand for goods and provide impetus to slagging economy.

Kashmir opens to tourists

  • Jammu and Kashmir will open for tourists from 10th October, two months after an advisory was issued asking tourists to leave the Valley due to terror threat.
  • The Centre had, on August 2, cancelled the Amarnath Yatra and advised pilgrims and tourists to cut short their stay in the Valley citing intelligence inputs of terror threats.
  • This was days before the revocation of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Turkey launches air strike in Syria

  • Turkey has launched an assault on Kurdish positions in northern Syria with air strikes and explosions reported near the border.
  • The US had virtually given a green signal to carry out the strikes by withdrawing its forces from the area, which acted as buffers between Kurdish fighters and Turkish armed forces.
  • The Turkish government treats Kurds as secessionist forces trying to destabilize their country by carrying out terrorist activities.
