WWE legend Kamala passes away

  • One of the most iconic superstars of WWE, James Harris, popularly known as Kamala, passed away at the age of 70.
  • Harris battled the greatest Superstars in sports-entertainment history, including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and Andre the Giant. He terrorized opponents and thrilled audiences in Mid-South, World Class Championship Wrestling, WCW and WWE.
  • Despite retiring, Kamala made appearances on shows until 2006 but started facing health issues with both his legs amputated.

US begins highest level Taiwan visit

  • A senior member of US President Donald Trump's administration landed in Taiwan for Washington's highest level visit since switching diplomatic recognition to China in 1979.
  • During the three-day visit Health Secretary Alex Azar will meet President Tsai Ing-wen, who advocates Taiwan being recognized as a sovereign nation and is loathed by China's leaders.
  • Azar is the most senior Cabinet member to visit Taiwan in decades and it comes as relations between the world's two biggest economic powers plunge to historic lows.

Social activist Ilina Sen dies

  • Ilina Sen, wife of doctor and rights campaigner Binayak Sen, passed away at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer.
  • As an activist, Ilina Sen is remembered for taking up the cause of mine worker trade unions in Chhattisgarh against corporatization and championing the cause of tribal rights.
  • She has also authored two books: Inside Chhattisgarh: A Political Memoir and Sukhvasin: The Migrant Woman of Chhattisgarh.
  • Along with her husband, Sen was a powerful voice against Salwa Judum and setting up of civil vigilante groups called the Koya Commandos in Chhattisgarh.

Verstappen wins 70th anniversary grand prix

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen took a sensational surprise victory in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix to bring Mercedes' domination to an end.
  • Verstappen defeated Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and polesitter Valtteri Bottas after an incredible display at Silverstone.
  • Hamilton fought back from early struggles to catch and pass Bottas for second place with two laps to go.
  • Verstappen's victory was a major upset and it was helped by a decision to use the hard tyres for the start of the race.

Gandhiji’s spectacles up for auction in UK

  • A pair of gold-plated spectacles believed to have been worn by Mahatma Gandhi and presented as a gift in the 1900s have emerged on the UK auction circuit, estimated to fetch between 10,000 pounds and 15,000 pounds.
  • The glasses, which have already attracted an online bid for 6,000 pounds, are said to have been in the family of the unnamed elderly gentleman vendor in England.
  • The spectacles formed an important and somewhat iconic part of Mahatma Gandhi's overall appearance. It was known that he would often give away his old or unwanted pairs to those in need or those who had helped him.
