US senate passes huge innovation bill

  • The Senate approved a bill that aims to boost U.S. semiconductor production and the development of artificial intelligence and other technology in the face of growing international competition, most notably from China.
  • The centrepiece of the bill is a $50 billion emergency allotment to the Commerce Department to stand up semiconductor development and manufacturing through research and incentive programs.
  • It comes as the nation’s share of semiconductor manufacturing globally has steadily eroded from 37% in 1990 to about 12% now.

Erdogan to visit Karabakh region

  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Azerbaijan to celebrate its victory over Armenia in a brief war last year.
  • Azerbaijan seized back swathes of territory in the separatist ethnic Armenia region with the help of Turkish combat drones and other weaponry from Ankara.
  • The conflict claimed 6,000 lives and ended with a Russian-brokered truce in November that saw ethnic Armenians pushed out of large parts of the land they had won during a brutal post-Soviet war in the 1990s.

Dihing Patkai becomes Assam’s 7th National Park

  • The State government has notified Dihing Patkai as a National Park, four days after creating the Raimona National Park in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
  • Assam now has the third most National Parks after the 12 in Madhya Pradesh and nine in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The five older National Parks in the State are Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri, Orang and Dibru-Saikhowa.
  • Kaziranga and Manas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are also tiger reserves along with Nameri and Orang.
  • Dihing Patkai is located in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts is a major elephant habitat and 310 species of butterflies have been recorded there. The park has 47 species each of reptiles and mammals, including the tiger and clouded leopard.

National award winning filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta passes away

  • Eminent film director Buddhadeb Dasgupta passed away due to old-age related ailments. He was 77.
  • Buddhadeb Dasgupta, along with Goutam Ghose and Aparna Sen, was the flag-bearer of the parallel cinema movement in Bengal for much of the 1980s and 1990s.
  • His earlier films like Dooratwa (1978), Grihajuddha (1982) and Andhi Gali (1984) focused on the Naxalite movement in Bengal and how it shaped the collective consciousness of Bengalis.

Asian gold medallist Dingko Singh passes away

  • Asian Games gold medal-winning former boxer Dingko Singh passed away after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 42 and had been fighting the disease since 2017.
  • Dingko became a national hero and a household name in Manipur when he returned with a gold medal from Bangkok Asian Games in Thailand in 1998.
  • He was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1998 in recognition of his achievement. He also got the prestigious Padma Shri Award, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2013.
