South Sudan President dissolves lower house of Parliament

  • South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dissolved Parliament, opening the way for lawmakers from opposing sides of the country’s civil war to be appointed under a 2018 peace accord.
  • Mr. Kiir’s decision was announced on public television but no date was given as to when the new Parliament will begin working.
  • The setting up of a new legislative body was part of an accord signed in September 2018 between Mr. Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar, to stop the five-year civil war that left 3,80,000 people dead and four million displaced.

Sadiq Khan re-elected London Mayor

  • Labour politician Sadiq Khan won re-election as London mayor in a narrower than expected victory over Conservative rival Shaun Bailey.
  • Khan became the first Muslim mayor of a Western capital when first elected in 2016. He won a second term with just over 1.2 million votes.
  • Entering his first term, Khan vowed to focus on providing affordable homes for Londoners and freezing transport fares, but saw his agenda engulfed by the pandemic.
  • In his previous role as a human rights lawyer, Khan spent three years chairing the civil liberties campaign group Liberty.

Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as Assam Chief minister

  • Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken oath as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam. He was administered the oath by Governor Jagdish Mukhi.
  • Sarma's popularity has been key in the National Democratic Alliance's victory in the Assembly polls in Assam with the alliance returning to power overcoming the stiff challenge posed by the Congress-led alliance.
  • BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority in Assam winning 75 seats of the total 126 constituencies. While BJP secured 60 seats, about 33 per cent, its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) bagged nine and six seats respectively.

DCGI approves anti-Covid drug prepared by DRDO

  • DCGIhas granted permission for emergency use of anti-COVID-19 therapeutic application of the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Emergency use of this drug as adjunct therapy in moderate to severe COVID-19 patients is permitted. Being a generic molecule and analogue of glucose, it can be easily produced and made available in plenty in the country.
  • The drug comes in powder form in sachet, which is taken orally by dissolving it in water. It accumulates in the virus infected cells and prevents virus growth by stopping viral synthesis and energy production. Its selective accumulation in virally infected cells makes this drug unique.
  • Clinical trial results have shown that this molecule helps in faster recovery of hospitalised patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence.

Supreme court forms task force for oxygen allocation

  • The Supreme Court has constituted a 12-member National Task Force to streamline and ensure the effective and transparent allocation of liquid medical oxygen on a scientific, rational and equitable basis.
  • A Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachudsaid the formula should be scrapped and the problem of allocation of oxygen required to be looked into afresh.
  • A new mechanism devised more scientifically should take care of present requirement for oxygen as well as be flexible enough to accommodate unforeseen demands due to emergencies which may arise within the allocated territories.
  • The court said the decision-makers should go beyond cobbling together ad-hoc solutions based on present problems.
