Imran Khan ousted as Pakistan Prime Minister

  • Imran Khan was ousted from his position as prime minister of Pakistan after 174 legislators voted against him in a no-confidence motion.
  • Pakistan’s parliament will meet to vote for the country’s new leader. The person will be able to hold power until October 2023.
  • The former captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team was elected prime minister in 2018, and promised to fight corruption and fix the economy.

India eradicated extreme poverty through PMGKY

  • A IMF paper reveals that the expansion of India’s food subsidy program absorbed a major part of the pandemic shock.
  • As per the paper, extreme poverty was as low as 1% in 2019 – a substantial reduction in poverty rates from 2011 levels.
  • The paper argues that incorporation of the food subsidy data has helped it conclude that the ‘official poverty line’ must be moved from (Population living on <$1) PPP $1.9 to $3.2.

Will Smith banned from Oscars for 10 years

  • Will Smith was banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years, two weeks after the actor slapped comedian Chris Rock.
  • Smith is also not permitted to attend any other events held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the next decade.
  • The Board’s decision as set out in a letter from Academy chiefs did not revoke the best actor award Smith won last month for “King Richard,” nor did it mention any ban on future Oscar nominations.

Hafeez Saeed sentenced to 32 years to prison

  • An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan sentenced Mumbai terror attack mastermind and banned Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed to 32 years in jail.
  • Earlier in five such cases, the 70-year-old radical cleric had already been convicted for 36 years imprisonment.
  • Saeed, a UN-designated terrorist on whom the U.S. has placed a $10 million bounty, was arrested on July 2019 in the terror financing cases.
