  • Joaquin Phoenix took home the Best Actor award for his performance in Joker. Renée Zellweger won the Oscar for her performance in Judy.
  • Brad Pitt and Laura Dern emerged as winners in the Supporting Actor and Actress category, respectively. Brad won for his performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Laura for Marriage Story.
  • The Best Adapted Screenplay Award was won by Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit and Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won won the award for Best Original Screenplay.

Pakistani bowler Naseem Shah becomes youngest player to take Test hat trick

  1. Pakistani teenage bowler Naseem Shah became the youngest cricketer to achieve a Test hat trick during the 1st Test match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.
  2. Aged 16 years and 359 days, he becomes the youngest player to record a Test hat trick, besting Bangladeshi Alok Kapali who achieved the feat aged 19 in 2003.

Cauvery delta to be declared protected agriculture zone

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has declared the Cauvery delta region as a protected agricultural zone and stated that his government would not give consent for hydrocarbon projects in the area.
  • The declaration of the ‘protected agricultural zone’ will, in effect, prevent non-agrarian projects in the region.
  • Farmers in the Cauvery delta region have been protesting for the past two years against a proposed hydrocarbon project of the Centre, which was to be executed by Vedanta Limited and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited.

Li-ion battery imports registers four times growth

  • India has quadrupled its imports of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and more than tripled its import bill on the product, according to a report by Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • Indian manufacturers source Li-ion batteries from China, Japan and South Korea and the country among the largest importers in the world.
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) manufactures such batteries but volumes are limited and they are restricted for use in space applications.
  • In June 2018, Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) in Tamil Nadu’s Karaikudi, under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and RAASI Solar Power Pvt Ltd signed a Memorandum of Agreement for transfer of technology for India’s first lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery project

Ciara storm hits UK and Europe

  • Storm Ciara  bartered the U.K. and northern Europe with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains Sunday, halting flights and trains and producing heaving seas that closed down ports.
  • At least 10 rail companies in Britain sent out “do not travel” warnings, while nearly 20 others told passengers to expect extensive delays.
  • Two huge ports on either side of the English Channel, Dover in England and Calais in France, shut down operations amid high waves.

Bangladesh U-19 lifts World Cup

  • Bangladesh boys created history by winning their country’s first global cricket title, shocking defending champions India by three wickets in the summit clash of the ICC U-19 World Cup in Potchefstroom in South Africa.
  • It was the first title for Bangladesh in any form of and ICC event. This is the third time that India has lost in the finals of the U-19 World Cup.
