Reliance buys New York’s Mandarin Oriental hotel of New York

  • Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd has announced the acquisition of New York’s premium luxury hotel Mandarin Oriental for $ 98.15 million.
  • Set up in 2003, Mandarin Oriental New York is an iconic luxury hotel located at 80 Columbus Circle, directly adjacent to the pristine Central Park and Columbus Circle.
  • This is the second acquisition of an iconic hotel by Reliance in less than a year.In April last year, Reliance acquired Stoke Park Ltd in the UK.

AdiShankaracharya’s birthplace to be declared as national monument

  • The National Monuments Authority (NMA) chairman Tarun Vijay met the governor of Kerala regarding the declaration of the birthplace of AdiSankaracharya in the state as a monument of national importance.
  • A monument of national importance, authorises the central government to “maintain, protect and promote the site”, which may be considered of significant historical importance.
  • The protection is mandated by the Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. There are around 3,600 monuments of national importance being protected by the ASI.

Kannada writer-activist Chandrashekhar Patil passes away

  • Noted Kannada writer, activist and public intellectual Prof. Chandrashekhar Patil, better known by his pen name Champa, passed away in Bengaluru.
  • He was one of the key leaders of the Gokak Agitation in the early 1980s, arguing for making Kannada the mandatory first language in school education across Karnataka.
  • He was one of the founders of the Bandaya movement of Kannada literature, a strand that took a radical stance in both literary form and view of society.

Novak Djokovic cleared to play in Australian Open

  • Novak Djokovic has been cleared to play in the Australian Open, after the Federal Court overturned the Australian Government’s decision to cancel the visa of the Serbian tennis star.
  • Djokovic had challenged the decision after he arrived in Australia for the Australian Open while stating that he had received an exemption from the Covid-19 vaccination.
  • Djokovic will be aiming for a 10th Australian Open crown and a record 21st Grand Slam title — a milestone that Spanish great Rafael Nadal is also chasing at Melbourne Park.

Actor Ramesh Babu passes away

  • Actor-producer Ramesh Babu passed away. He was 56. Ramesh was the elder son of veteran Telugu superstar Krishna and brother of Mahesh Babu.
  • Ramesh Babu made his acting debut as a child artiste at the age of 12. Samraat (1987) was his first film as a solo hero, he has over 15 films to his credit as an actor.
  • Babu retired from acting in 1997 to turn into a producer. Ramesh Babu produced Arjun and Athidhi movies with Mahesh Babu in the lead roles under Krishna Productions banner.
