Australia joins USA in diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics

  • Australian Prime Minister Scott announced the “diplomatic boycott” in Canberra in response to “human rights abuses” carried out in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region
  • China strongly responded to Australia’s announcement of a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
  • USA would boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing because of China’s human rights “atrocities”, although American athletes are free to compete at the Games.

Rohit Sharma appointed India’s new ODI captain

  • The BCCI has named Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain of the Indian cricket team. He will take over from his predecessor ViratKohli starting the three-ODI series against South Africa in January 2022.
  • With Kohli already stepping down as India’s T20I captain, it was only a matter of time before Rohit took over as the team’s limited-overs captain.
  • He was also promoted as India’s vice-captain in Tests, the deputy to Kohli, taking over from an out-of-form AjinkyaRahane.
  • Rohit has less than a year to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, which will be followed by the 50-over World Cup in India in 2023.

Cabinet approves Ken-Betwa river linking project

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the funding and implementation of the Ken-Betwa inter-linking of rivers project.
  • The total cost of the Ken-Betwa link project has been assessed at Rs 44,605 crore. The project will be completed in eight years and it will generate 103 MW hydropower and 27 MW solar power.
  • This project involves the transfer of water from Ken to the Betwa river through the construction of Daudhan Dam and a canal linking the two rivers, the Lower Orr Project, Kotha Barrage and Bina Complex Multipurpose Project.

Olaf Scholzvoted German Chancellor

  • Social Democrat Olaf Scholz became Germany’s chancellor, ending 16 years of conservative rule under Angela Merkel.
  • Scholz has served as vice chancellor and finance minister in coalition with Merkel. He won a majority of 395 votes from lawmakers in the lower house of parliament.
  • Scholz will lead an unprecedented tripartite coalition on the federal level with the pro-spending, environmentalist Greens and the fiscally more conservative, libertarian Free Democrats (FDP).

Jnanpith awards

  • Assamese poet NilmaniPhookan Jr won the 56th Jnanpith Award and Konkani novelist DamodarMauzo won the 57th Jnanpith Award.
  • The country’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith is bestowed on writers for “their outstanding contribution to literature”.
  • Mauzo has previously won the Sahitya Akademi Award. He is known for his novels, such as Karmelin, and Tsunami Simon, and short stories Teresa’s Man and Other Stories from Goa.
  • Phookan is a Sahitya Akademi and Padma Shri awardee. He is a poet of renown and has written Surya HenuNamiAheEiNodiyedi, GulapiJamurLagna, and Kobita.
