Fire breaks out at Moria refugee camp

  • Fire broke out at Greece's overcrowded migrant camp of Moria on the island of Lesbos early on Wednesday.
  • The Moria facility, which hosts more than 12,000 people - more than four times its stated capacity - has been frequently criticised by aid groups for poor living conditions.
  • Lesbos, which lies just off the Turkish coast, was on the front line of a massive movement of refugees and migrants to Europe in 2015-2016.

Oxford vaccine trial put on hold

  • Final clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, have been put on hold after a participant had a suspected adverse reaction in the UK.
  • The research team has said the development to be routine. The AstraZeneca-Oxford University vaccine is seen as a strong contender among dozens being developed globally.
  • Any time a volunteer is admitted to hospital and the cause of their illness is not immediately apparent it triggers a study to be put on hold.

Missing Arunachal youths found in Chinese territory

  • China's PLA has responded to hotline message sent by Indian Army and have confirmed that the missing youths from Arunachal Pradesh have been found by their side.
  • The Indian Army sent a hotline message to the PLA establishment at the border point in Arunachal Pradesh and was waiting for a response.
  • The five youths had gone to the border area and two of their friends, who managed to return home, told villagers that the five have been abducted from Sera-7 area.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes second player to score

  • Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo became the second men's player to reach 100 international goals as he guided his side to a victory against Sweden.
  • Ronaldo is only the second men's player to reach 100 goals for his country after Ali Daei, who netted 109 goals for Iran.
  • Ronaldo had to miss the team's previous clash against Croatia due to a toe infection. Despite Ronaldo's absence, Portugal had registered a 4-1 win in the match.

Madhya Pradesh has highest area under organic cultivation

  • Madhya Pradesh has the largest acreage of agricultural land under organic cultivation, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
  • The top three States — Rajasthan and Maharashtra are the other two — account for about half of the area under organic cultivation. The top 10 States account for about 80% of the total area under organic cultivation.
  • At least 20 States have a policy, mission or Act with regard to organic farming. Some States have had a policy for several years but have not been able to cover much area in absolute terms under organic cultivation.
  • Only Sikkim has become fully organic. Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have committed to become 100% natural-farming States by 2027 and 2022, respectively.
