Ex-IPS officer K Annamalai appointed BJP chief in Tamil Nadu

  • Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer K Annamalai, 37, was appointed as the new BJP chief of Tamil Nadu, succeeding L Murugan who was inducted into the Union cabinet.
  • Annamalai, a Karnataka cadre IPS officer, resigned from service in 2019 and joined the BJP last year. He was Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru South) in 2019 when the 2011 batch IPS quit the civil services.
  • Since 2019, he is the third leader to take charge of the BJP’s top post in Tamil Nadu. Murugan took over as BJP chief six months after his predecessor Tamilisai Soundararajan was made Telangana governor.

New snake species in Mizoram named after local warrior

  • A new snake species was discovered by a team of Mizoram University researchers in a dried-up area of Tuinghaleng river bed.
  • This snake was named Stoliczkia vanhnuailianai, in honour of Vanhnuailiana, a famous Mizo warrior. This new species is termed the only third species of Stoliczkia belonging from India.
  • Vanhnuailiana was a powerful chief of the Lushai Hills (now Mizoram) during the mid-1800s. He led several successful campaigns against the rival chiefs of the region.
  • The new species is non-venomous, with a dark brown shade above, and a few dorsal scale rows bright yellow in colour. Its head scales are uniformly dark brown, but has a bright pinkish sutures.

Zaila Avant-garde becomes first African American to win spelling bee competition

  • Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old basketball prodigy, has won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, becoming the first African-American contestant to win in 93 editions of the prestigious competition.
  • Indian-Americans,Chaitra Thummala from San Francisco and Bhavana Madini from New York won the second and third place at the keenly-fought competition.
  • Avant-garde correctly spelt "Murraya"- a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees having pinnate leaves and flowers to win the competition and USD 50,000 prize money.

Tokyo Olympics to be held without spectators

  • The Tokyo Olympics will be held without spectators at all venues in and around the Japanese capital due to a spike in coronavirus infections.
  • The announcement, abandoning their earlier plan to stage the Olympics in front of a limited number of fans, came after the government decided to put Tokyo under another state of emergency until Aug. 22.
  • In addition to Tokyo, the Olympics will be held behind closed doors at venues in Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama, three prefectures near the capital. Some other venues of the Olympics are located outside the metropolitan area.

Zika virus cases detected in Kerala

  • Kerala, which has been reporting a surge in coronavirus cases, has officially confirmed its first case of Zika virus, a mosquito-borne viral infection.
  • The symptoms of Zika virus include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache.
  • The virus is spread through the Aedes species of mosquitoes, which is found in high density across the state. Aedes mosquitoes, which are also carriers of dengue, breed in stagnant freshwater and rest mostly indoors.
  • Zika virus has often been linked to birth defects and development of Guillain-Barre syndrome, where one's immune system attacks the nerves.
