US universities to sue immigration authorities regarding new visa rules for foreign students

  • Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have sued the Department of Homeland Security and the federal immigration agency over new guidelines barring foreign students from remaining in America if their universities switched to online-only classes in the Fall.
  • The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief to bar the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement from the enforcing federal guidelines.
  • The Harvard lawsuit argues that the guidelines violated the Administrative Procedure Act by failing to consider important aspects of the problem.

Domestication of chickens

  • The DNA sequencing of 863 genomes of chickens has showed the first domestication of chicken occurred in south-western China, northern Thailand and Myanmar.
  • A collaborated study, which involved sequencing of genomes from all four species of the genus Gallus, five sub-species of Red Jungle Fowl and various domestic chicken breeds collected worldwide, revealed single domestication from Red Jungle Fowl sub-species Gallus gallus spadiceus.
  • The study also demonstrated that all five Red Jungle Fowl sub-species were genetically differentiated from each other approximately 50,000 years ago, corresponding to their geographic ranges and taxonomic classifications.

Australia ends Hong Kong extradition treaty

  • Australia suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong and extended visas for Hong Kong residents in response to China’s imposition of tough national security law.
  • It announced a range of visas that will be extended from two to five years and offers of pathways to permanent residency visas. It is not clear how many Hong Kongers are expected to get the extensions.
  • The move comes after China bypassed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council to impose the sweeping security legislation without public consultation.

TVS Srichakra director P. Vijayaraghavan passes away

  • P. Vijayaraghavan, non-executive and non-independent Director of TVS Srichakra Ltd., passed away early in Chennai following a cardiac arrest.
  • Vijayaraghavan served the TVS Group for over five decades. He played a pre-eminent role in the growth of TVS Srichakra right from its founding.
  • As a veteran of the rubber and tyre industry, and as an active member of several industry bodies, he played a pivotal role in the growth of the sector in India.
  • TVS Srichakra Ltd. is the leading manufacturer of two & three-wheeler tyres and off-highway tyres, and is part of the TVS Group.

Bollywood actor Jagdeep dies

  • Bollywood actor Jagdeep, known for his role as SoormaBhopali in hit movie Sholay passed away in Mumbai following age-related illness. He was 81.
  • The last of the comic icons in the tradition of seniors Johnny Walker and Mehmood, the actor had a prolific career that lasted beyond 400 films and many memorable roles.
  • Jagdeep, whose real name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, started his journey in cinema with the 1951 film “Afsana”, which marked filmmaker B.R. Chopra’s directorial debut.
