Anup Chandra Pandey appointed Election Commissioner

  • Former Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Anup Chandra Pandey took charge as the new election commissioner of India after being appointed for the post by the President.
  • The post fell vacant in April following the retirement of former chief election commissioner Sunil Arora.
  • He was appointed as the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh from September 2017 to August 2019 and was earlier the state's industrial development commissioner.
  • The former bureaucrat has also served in the central government for four years as a joint secretary.

India and Thailand start joint patrolling in Andamans sea

  • Indian and Thai navies have kicked off a three-day coordinated patrol in the Andaman Sea in the backdrop of growing concern over China's increasing maritime presence in the Indian Ocean region.
  • The Indian Navy's offshore patrol vessel INS Saryu and Thai ship Krabi along with Dornier maritime patrol aircraft from both navies are participating in the 31st edition of the India-Thailand coordinated patrol (CORPAT).
  • The two navies have been bi-annually undertaking CORPAT along their international maritime boundary line (IMBL) since 2005 with an aim to keep the vital part of the Indian Ocean safe and secure for global trade.

Australia’s largest dinosaur discovered

  • A new dinosaur species has been discovered in the Australian outback and is being touted as the largest to ever roam on the continent.
  • The discovery and species categorisation come 15 years after its bones were first found.The discovery states that the massive animal is part of the Titanosaur family that roamed on Earth about 100 million years ago.
  • The fossilised bones of the dinosaur were first found at a family farm in 2006 in the Eromanga Basin and were nicknamed "Cooper".

Carbon dioxide levels in atmosphere at record levels

  • The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached levels not seen on Earth in millions of years. The data showed that the coronavirus pandemic was not enough to slow production of the greenhouse gas.
  • Climate change does more than increase temperatures. It makes extreme weather – storms, wildfires, floods and droughts – worse and more frequent and causes oceans to rise and get more acidic, studies show.
  • Carbon levels in the air were higher in the distant past before humans came on the scene. But levels probably haven't been this high in millions of years.

Antonio Guterres re-elected as UN chief

  • UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is all set to be re-elected as chief of the world body after the powerful Security Council will vote for him for a second five-year term beginning January 1, 2022.
  • The 15-nation Council adopted the resolution recommending Guterres' name to the 193-member General Assembly for a second term as Secretary General.
  • India had expressed its support for re-election of Guterres as UN Chief and welcomed the adoption of the resolution recommending his name.
