Former hockey coach MK Kaushik passes away

  • Olympic gold medallist, former India coach, Arjuna and Dronacharya awardee Maharaj Kishen Kaushik passed away in Delhi. He was 66
  • Kaushik was a member of the 1980 gold-winning Olympic side.He excelled as a coach with both the men’s and women’s teams, guiding them to the podium at major continental events.
  • He retired as Deputy Director of Sports with Haryana, was also in charge of the Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy and later at the National Hockey Academy in New Delhi as part of Khelo India.

Veteran music composer Vanraj Bhatia passes away

  • Veteran music composer Vanraj Bhatia died in Mumbai after a brief illness. He was 94 years old.
  • Bhatia had scored music for Shyam Benegal classics like Ankur and Bhumika and TV series Yatra and Bharat Ek Khoj (Discovery of India).
  • He also created the soundtracks for Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane and Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. His last work was an opera titled Agni Varsha which was performed in New York.
  • Among the awards he won are the National Award for Best Music for Govind Nihalani's TV series Tamas and also the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.He received India's fourth-highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri in 2012.

Fire aboard INS Vikramaditya

  • There was a minor fire on board India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya on May 8. All personnel on board have been accounted for and no major damage has been reported.
  • The warship is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier purchased by India from Russia in 2013 and was renamed in honour of Vikramaditya, the legendary emperor.
  • Originally built as Baku and commissioned in 1987, the carrier served with the Soviet (until the dissolution of the Soviet Union) and Russian Navies before being decommissioned in 1996, it being too expensive to operate.

Endangered seals found dead near Caspian sea coast

  • At least 170 endangered seals have washed up dead over the course of several days on the shores of the Caspian Sea in Russia’s republic of Dagestan.
  • The Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water, is bounded by five countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan.
  • The seal population of the Caspian Sea has for decades suffered from overhunting and the effects of industrial pollution.
  • Pollution from the extraction of oil and gas, along with declining water levels due to climate change, pose a threat to many species and put the future of the sea itself at risk.

AINRC chief N Rangasamy takes oath as Puducherry CM

  • All India NR Congress chief N Rangasamy was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry by Lt. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.
  • Rangasamy became the CM of Puducherry for the fourth time and will lead the AINRC-BJP coalition.
  • He heads the NDA government which comprises AINRC and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The AINRC won 10 seats in the polls and the BJP, six. The Congress won two, and its ally DMK, six.
