Hyundai and other companies apologize for offending posts on Kashmir

  • Hyundai Motor Company, the parent body of Hyundai and Kia in South Korea, on Tuesday, issued an apology stating ‘deeply regret for the inconvenience caused’.
  • The apology and clarification came after a dealer in Pakistan posted on social media about the Kashmir Solidarity Day.
  • Other companies like Honda Motors, KFC, Pizza hut, Suzuki motors, Kia motors have distanced themselves from the comments of their Pakistani dealers.

ISRO to launch Earth observation satellite on February 14

  • After a rather muted 2021, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set for its first launch of 2022 next week.
  • ISRO plans to place an Earth Observation Satellite (EOS – 04) on board the PSLV C-52 on February 14. This will be the first launch for ISRO under the new chairman, S. Somanath.
  • EOS-04 is a radar-imaging satellite, designed to provide high-quality images under all weather conditions for applications such as agriculture, forestry & plantations, soil moisture and hydrology, and flood mapping.

Facebook and Instagram may exit EU

  • Meta Platforms Inc. may pull out Facebook and Instagram from EU region as the duo struggle with data privacy regulations in Europe.
  • The company is being challenged by evolving rules and regulations that dictate whether, how, and under what circumstances they can transfer data that is critical to their operations.
  • This includes data shared between countries or regions in which they operate and data shared between their products and services.

White House top scientist Eric Lander resigns

  • The top science adviser to the White House, Eric Lander, resigned. Lander is the first member of Biden’s Cabinet to resign.
  • An internal review last year, prompted by a workplace complaint, found evidence that Dr. Landerbullied staffers and treated them disrespectfully.
  • The founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Dr. Lander is a mathematician and molecular biologist. He was lead author of the first paper announcing the details of the human genome, the so-called “book of life”.

New mammal white cheeked macaque discovered in India

  • Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have found a new mammal species in the country — the White Cheeked Macaque.
  • While the Macaque was first discovered in China in 2015, its existence was not known in India before discovering its presence in the remote Anjaw district in central Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The White Cheeked Macaque has distinct white cheeks, long and thick hair on the neck and a longer tail than other Macaque species. It is the last mammal to have been discovered in Southeast Asia.
