Ashwin becomes first spinner in over hundred years to get wicket of first ball

  • Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the first spinner in over 100 years of Test cricket to earn the distinction of dismissing a batsman off the very first ball of an innings.
  • On day four of the first Test against England, Ashwin sent back England opener Rory Burns off the very first ball of the second innings, caught by Ajinkya Rahane in the slips, to become only the third spinner in the 134 year history of the game to earn that rare distinction.
  • The last time it happened was when South African leg spinner Bert Vogler dimissed England's Tom Hayward in a Test match at the Oval in 1907. It was the first ball of the match.
  • The first spinner to achieve the feat was Yorkshire left-arm spinner Bobby Peel during an Ashes Test match in 1888.

Tesla to accept Bitcoin payment for Cars

  • Holders of Bitcoin may be able to cash in some of their investment in the digital currency for a brand new electric car.
  • Electric automaker Tesla said that it has invested around $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and it plans to begin accepting the digital currency as payment for its high-end vehicles soon.
  • Bitcoin has drawn enthusiasts for its scarcity and security, but the volatile digital currency still is not widely used to pay for goods and services.
  • It's mostly been a store of value, like gold, with some limited merchants like Overstock accepting bitcoin for payment.It's also used by those distrustful of the banking system or criminals seeking to launder money.

Anti Cow slaughter bill passed in Karnataka Legislative Council

  • The anti-cow slaughter Bill was passed in the Karnataka Legislative Council by a voice-vote amid protest by the opposition.
  • During the discussion, several opposition members termed the Bill as anti-farmers, said it was targeting certain sections of people, and demanded that it be withdrawn or be referred to the joint select committee for vetting.
  • The government had, on January5, promulgated the anti-cow slaughter ordinance that provides for punishment for killing of cattle and offers protection to those acting in good faith to save them, as the Bill to this effect was yet to be cleared by the Legislative Council.
  • Under the ordinance, slaughter of cattle would lead to imprisonment of upto 3 to 7 years and a fine ranging from ? 50,000 to ? 5 lakh. Subsequent offences would attract imprisonment of upto seven years and a fine from ? 1 lakh to ? 10 lakh.

Actor Rajiv Kapoor passes away

  • Bollywood actor and Raj Kapoor's son Rajiv Kapoor passed away. He was 58. He suffered a massive heart attack, following which he was rushed to a hospital.
  • Rajiv Kapoor was a part of Bollywood's Kapoor clan. He was the brother of Randhir Kapoor, Rima Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, and late Rishi Kapoor.
  • Rajiv Kapoor made his acting debut in 1983 with Ek Jaan Hain Hum. He was seen as the leading actor in father Raj Kapoor's last directorial venture Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). His most notable being Aasmaan (1984), Lover Boy (1985), Zabardast (1985), and Hum To Chale Pardes (1988).
  • His last film appearance was in Zimmedaar (1990) after which he turned to producing and directing films.
