Joaquin Phoenix named PETA person of the year

  • Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix, known for his role as the Joker has been named by international animal rights group, PETA as the person of the year for 2019.
  • Phoenix is vegan since the age of three and has been a longtime supporter of the animal rights organisation.
  • He recently appeared in PETA's "We Are All Animals" billboards in Times Square and on Sunset Billboard as he promoted legislation to ban travelling wild-animal circuses.
  • Previous PETA Person of the Year winners include Pope Francis, Oprah Winfrey, Anjelica Huston, Olivia Munn, Eva Mendes and Alicia Silverstone.

Mega food park in Madhya Pradesh

  • Union Minister for Food processing, Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurated Avantee Food park in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.
  • It is the first food park in central India and will process items like Soya bean, gram, wheat and vegetables.

Domestic abuse victims face twice the risk of long term solutions illnesses

  • Research has shown that women who have experienced domestic abuse are almost twice as likely to develop fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) than those who have not.
  • Fibromyalgia causes pain all over the body, while CFS is an illness with a wide range of symptoms, most common of which is extreme tiredness. 
  • The higher incidence of long-term illnesses, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, for abused women implies the existence of an additional hidden cost to society that needs to be understood.

Children born out of C section less prone to obesity

  • A child born through caesarean procedure or C-section is no more likely to develop obesity than those born through vaginal delivery.
  • The findings contradict several smaller studies that did find an association between C-section deliveries and offspring obesity.
  • Drastic increase in C section delivery has sparked intense research into the long-term consequences of C-section on offspring health.

Statue of Unity gets more visitors than Statue of Liberty

  • The Statue of Unity has surpassed the footfall at the 133-year-old Statue of Liberty in the US, with an average of over 15,000 tourists visiting the monument in Gujarat daily.
  • The Statue of Liberty of New York, United States, attracts around 10,000 visitors a day.
  • The Statue of Unity is a statue of Vallabhbhai Patel, the first home minister of the country. With a height of 182 metres, it is the world's tallest statue. It was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar.
