Brazilian singer and Latin Grammy award winner passes

  • MaríliaMendonça, one of Brazil’s most popular singers and a Latin Grammy winner, died on November 5 in an airplane crash on her way to a concert. She was 26.
  • The rising star performed country music, in Brazil called sertanejo. She was known for tackling feminist issues in her songs, such as denouncing men who control their partners, and calling for female empowerment.
  • Her album “EmTodosos Cantos” won her the 2019 Latin Grammy for best sertanejo album. She was nominated for the same award this year for her album “Patroas”.

Pakistan denies airspace for Srinagar-Sharjah flight

  • Pakistan has denied permission to the Go First airline, previously known as GoAir, to use its airspace for operating flights from Kashmir to the United Arab Emirates.
  • This week, Pakistan had said that it did not allow Srinagar-Sharjah flight of Go First to use its airspace, forcing it to take a longer route and fly over Gujarat to reach its destination in the UAE.
  • Go First had started direct flights between Srinagar and Sharjah from October 23. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the service during his visit to the Valley last month.

Damon Galgut wins Man Booker Prize

  • South African writer Damon Galgut won the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction with “The Promise”. He is the third South African novelist to win the Booker Prize.
  • Mr. Galgut had been British bookmakers’ runaway favorite to win the 50,000-pound ($69,000) prize with his story of a troubled Afrikaner family and its broken promise to a Black employee.
  • Mr. Galgut took the prize on his third time as a finalist. He was previously shortlisted for “The Good Doctor” in 2003 and “In a Strange Room” in 2010, but lost both times.

Ideal Icecream founder Prabhakar Kamath passes away

  • S Prabhakar Kamath, founder of Ideal Ice Cream and known for Pabba’s Ice cream parlour in Mangaluru passed away at the age of 79.
  • Kamath started Ideal’s Parlour in Mangaluru on May 1, 1975, which became a massive hit in the next two years.
  • Prabhakar was also fondly called ‘PabbalMaam’ after the grand success of the ice cream parlour Pabbas on MG Road.
  • While Kamath started his business with 14 flavours, his ice cream outlet became famous for ‘gadbad’, a speciality.

US Navy launches ship for gay rights leader

  • A Navy ship named for slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, who served four years in the Navy before being forced out, was christened and launched in San Diego Bay.
  • Milk was one of the first openly gay candidates elected to public office. He was serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978 when he was assassinated.
  • General Dynamics NASSCO began construction of the six oilers in San Diego in 2018 under a $3.2 billion Navy contract. The first ship in the class, the John Lewis, was christened this summer.
