  • Cyclone Bulbul is steadily gathering intensity over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to turn into a very severe cyclonic storm according to predictions released by the India Meteorological Department.
  • Weather predictions suggest that Bulbul will skirt Odisha and head towards West Bengal and Bangladesh in the upcoming days.
  • Cyclone Bulbul is expected to bring rainfall over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, north coastal Odisha and coastal West Bengal.

Former Mohun Bagan secretary Anjan Mitra passes away

  • Former General Secretary of Mohun Bagan club Anjan Mitra passed away in Kolkata. He was 72.
  • A chartered accountant by profession, Mitra was an ardent football and Mohun Bagan fan since his childhood, and remained associated with the famous club as an administrator for three decades.
  • He served as the club general secretary for 23 years, before stepping down last year.

Kerala government to provide free internet to BPL families

  • The Kerala government has approved the fibre optic network project to provide free high-speed internet connection to around 20 lakh families below the poverty line in the state.
  • The scheme will be set up by Kerala State Electricity Board Limited and Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited.

Bengali writer Nabaneeta Sen passes away

  • Renowned Bengali author Nabaneeta Dev Sen passed away at 81 years  in Kolkata.
  • She was also a University Grants Commission Senior Fellow at the University of Delhi. Sen had retired in 2002 as the Professor of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University.
  • In 1999, she was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award and in 2000 she was given the Padma Shri award.
  • She had published more than 80 books in Bengali. Her first collection of poems ‘PrathamPratyay’ was published in 1959.
  • She was married to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, before parting ways.
