ISRO releases Chandrayaan-2 data

  • Chandrayaan-2 data product and science documents were released by ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan, to commemorate two years of completion of Chandrayaan-2.
  • The eight payloads on-board Chandrayaan-2 are conducting scientific observations of the Moon by remote sensing and in-situ techniques.
  • The science data are being made available for analysis by academia and institutes, for a greater participation to bring out more science from Chandrayaan-2 mission.

Kong police arrest Tiananmen Square vigil leaders

  • Hong Kong police arrested four leaders of the group that organized the city's annual Tiananmen Square Commemorationsafter they refused to cooperate in a national security investigation.
  • The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China had openly challenged the enforcement of a 14-month-old national security law.
  • The alliance is best known for organizing candlelight vigils in Hong Kong on the anniversary of China’s bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.

Mexican top court decriminalizes abortion

  • Mexico's Supreme Court unanimously ruled that penalizing abortion is unconstitutional, a major victory for advocates of women's health and human rights.
  • The decision in the world's second-biggest Roman Catholic country means that courts can no longer prosecute abortion cases, and follows the historic legalization of the right in Argentina, which took effect earlier this year.
  • It also comes as a growing feminist movement has taken to the streets in Mexico to press for change, including calls to end anti-abortion laws on the books in much of the country.

Actor Michael K Williams passes away

  • Emmy-nominated actor Michael K. Williams, best known for his role on the Baltimore-based HBO series “The Wire,” has died. He was 54.
  • Williams made his feature film debut in the 1996 movie “Bullet,” in which he played High Top. But he was perhaps most known for his role as Omar Little on “The Wire,” which ran for five seasons.
  • Williams went on to play roles in movies such as Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead” and others, including “The Road,” “Gone Baby Gone,” “Life During Wartime,” “I Think I Love My Wife” and “Wonderful World.”

Mullah Akhund set to be acting PM of Afghanistan

  • The Taliban announced their new interim government in Afghanistan which will be headed by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund.
  • Head of the Taliban’s leadership council, also known as the RehbariShura, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund will act as the head of the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
  • Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund is still listed as a terrorist by the United Nations (UN) over his suspected role in the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in March 2001.
