Italy and England to fight in Euro cup final

  • England and their long-suffering fans finally have the chance to add another trophy to the 1966 World Cup after they overcame Denmark 2-1 in extra-time.
  • Italy booked their ticket to the final after keeping their nerve from the penalty spot to edge Spain 4-2 in a shootout.
  • England will be aiming to win the European crown for the first time whereas Italy had won it earlier in 1960s.

F1 legend Carlos Reutemann passes away

  • Former Formula One driver and Argentine politician Carlos Reutemann, who competed for more than a decade at the top of world motorsports, died aged 79.
  • Reutemann was considered the greatest Argentine driver after five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio whose heyday was in the 1950s.
  • Reutemann finished runner-up in the Formula One championship to Brazilian Nelson Piquet in 1981 after coming third in 1975, 1978 and 1980.
  • The Argentine broke into Formula One in 1972 and joined Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team alongside then twice world champion Graham Hill.

Cairn energy gets court order to seize Indian government properties

  • Britain’s Cairn Energy Plc has secured a French court order to seize about 20 Indian government properties in France to recover a part of $1.7 billion arbitration award.
  • On June 11, the French court had ordered Cairn Energy’s take-over of Indian government properties, mostly comprising flat; and the legal process got completed on Wednesday evening.
  • An arbitration panel had in December ordered the Indian government to return $1.2 billion plus interest and penalty to Cairn Energy after reversing a retrospective tax demand.
  • With Indian government not honouring the award, Cairn Energy has moved in multiple jurisdictions overseas to recover the amount due by seizing Indian government assets.

Former Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh passes away

  • Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away. He was 87.
  • Singh was a nine-time MLA was elected to the State Legislative Assembly first time in October 1983. He was at present MLA from Arki assembly constituency in Solan district.
  • Singh was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1962, in all he was a five-time MP. He served as Minister of State for Industries, between 1982 to 1983 and Union Minister of  Steel, between 2009 to 2011 and Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) from between 2011 to 2012.

Haitian President assassinated

  • Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in an attack on his private residence, the country’s interim prime minister has announced.
  • Haiti’s economic, political and social woes have deepened recently, with gang violence spiking heavily in the capital of Port-au-Prince, inflation spiralling and food and fuel becoming scarcer.
  • Moïse had been ruling by decree for more than two years after the country failed to hold elections, which led to Parliament being dissolved.
  • In recent months, opposition leaders demanded he step down, arguing that his term legally ended in February 2021.
