India elected to UN Economic and Social council

  • India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, for the 2022-24 term.
  • The 54-member Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
  • It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.
  • India was elected in the Asia-Pacific States category along with Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Oman in the elections.

PM Modi announces free Vaccine for all

  • The Centre will provide free covid-19 vaccines to all adults from 21 June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a revision of the government’s vaccination.
  • The central government will now buy 75% of vaccines and give them free of cost to states.
  • The previous policy came under a cloud after states complained they were unable to procure vaccines from manufactures.
  • The manufacturers preferred to sell directly to the Centre, with the result that private hospitals ended up with bigger stocks than the states.

FDA approves controversial Alzheimer’s drug

  • The U.S.’s pharma regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conditionally approved the use of an Alzheimer’s drug, called aducanumab.
  • The drug’s approval had become controversial, with growing pressure from those impacted by the debilitating degenerative brain disease on one hand and opposition from many in the scientific community.
  • Aducanumab is based on the amyloid hypothesis of the disease. The drug supposedly binds to beta amyloid molecules and removes them.
  • The drug, a monoclonal antibody, is given monthly via injection to patients who suffer from early stages of Alzheimer’s with mild cognitive challenges.

Sunil Chhetri surpasses Lionel Messi in the active goalscorers list

  • Sunil Chhetri surpasses Lionel Messi to reach 2nd spot in elite list of goalscorers, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Chhetri achieved the feat when he struck a brace to help India defeat Bangladesh 2-0 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
  • With two goals in the match, Chhetri took his total international goals tally to 74, surpassing Messi who has 72 goals for Argentina in his career so far, and is fourth in the list.
  • The India forward is now only behind Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo in the list, who has 103 international goals to his name. UAE's Ali Mabkhout is third on the list having scored 73 .

Maldives elected as President of UNGA

  • Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid was elected as President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, garnering 143 votes out of the 191 ballots cast.
  • The 193-member General Assembly had voted to elect the President, who will preside over the 76th session of the UN body that will commence in September.
  • In the fray for the election was Mr Shahid as well as former foreign minister of Afghanistan Dr Zalmai Rassoul, who got 48 votes.
  • According to the established rules of regional rotation, the President of the 76th session of the General Assembly was to be elected from the Group of Asia-Pacific States.
  • Mr Shahid will succeed Turkish diplomat Volkan Bozkir who was UNGA President for the 75th session that came amid the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
