BRO official set up India’s first Ice Cafe

  • The Border Road Organisation (BRO) officials recently set up India’s first ever ice café, at mountain village named Gaya inLadakh, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • It is located at at 14,000 feet heightabove sea level, on the famous Manali-Leh Highway.  
  • The ice café’s sculpture resembles Buddhist meditation place and is built in shape of a mound.
  • It also serves the purpose of saving water in winter and using it for irrigation purposes in springwhen ice melts.
  • Its design is inspired from the works of famous Indian engineer and innovator and education reformist, SonamWangchuk who is famous for his ice stupa project.

Hyderabad Airport ranked World’s 8th best Airport

  • In recently released survey called ‘AirHelp Score 2019’, India’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport of Hyderabad was ranked as the world’s 8th Best Airport.
  • The airports were rated on the basis of time performance, quality of service provided and food & shopping options.
  • The survey was conducted by AirHelp. It is organization which is specialized in air traveler rights and seeks compensation for customers in cases of delays or cancellations of flights. The year 2019 was their 7th annual ranking.

Chhattisgarh: 1st Anti-Naxal Women’s Commando unit

  • Chhattisgarh State Police has deployed first ever Anti-Naxal women’s commando unit named as ‘DanteshwariLadake’ or ‘Fighters of Goddess Danteshwari’.
  • These women commandos have been inducted in Chhattisgarh’s frontline anti-naxal force called the District Reserve Guard (DRG).
  • They are inducted in the state’s Naxal-hit Dantewada district. The unit comprises of 30 women commandos out of which 10 are surrendered women Naxals and 10 are assistant constables, part of anti-naxal movement SalwaJudum. They are led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Chhattisgarh.
  • DanteshwariLadake is a specially raised squad and was part of security forces “short action teams” that eliminated three Naxal commanders in past.

Indian Army to commemorate 2019 as Year of Next of Kin

  • Indian Army is commemorating the year 2019 as the ‘Year of Next of Kin’.
  • It is an attempt by Indian army to reach out to next of kin of battle casualties, such as ex-servicemen and serving soldiers in a move to inform them about financial benefits and welfare schemes they are entitled to and also help resolve pension related problems.
  • The issue gains importance as most next of kin of deceased soldiers are unaware of financial benefits they are entitled to.
  • Indian Army is also facing huge challenge in reaching target population especially those in rural areas and places affected with either insurgency or having minimal army presence.
