China gives permission for downstream dams on Brahmaputra river

  • China has given its nod for the first downstream dams to be built on the lower reaches of Brahmaputra River or Yarlung Zangbo River.
  • A draft of China's new Five-Year Plan talks about building hydropower bases on the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra river as among the priority energy projects to be undertaken in the next five years.
  • The new five-year-plan also suggests that multiple long-pending proposals from Chinese hydropower companies to build dams on the lower reaches including near the India-China border may be given the nod.

Joan Laporta elected President of FC Barcelona

  • Spanish giants Barcelona have finally elected a president. Joan Laporta has been elected as the President following the conclusion of election process.
  • Laporta will begin his stint with the club for the second time, after enjoying a successful run more than a decade ago.
  • Laporta succeeds Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned as president in October to avoid facing a vote of no confidence from members who turned on him after Lionel Messi tried to leave the club.
  • Laporta takes over a club with huge financial problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic eliminating ticket revenue and badly hitting merchandising income.

Veteran athlete Ishar Singh Deol passes away

  • Veteran Indian athlete Ishar Singh Deol, a recipient of the Dhyan Chand National Sports Award, has died at the age of 91
  • Deol had won many medals for the country and the State since 1951 and was awarded the Dhyan Chand National Award in 2009 for his lifelong contribution towards sports.
  • Deol had competed in the first three Asian Games and won a bronze medal in the second Asian Games held in Manila, Philippines in 1954.

Carolina Marin defeats P V Sindhu in Swiss challenge finals

  • World champion PV Sindhu finished a distant second best in the Swiss Open final after being completely routed by Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain.
  • It was Sindhu's third successive loss to Marin, who had won both the Super 1000 events in Thailand in January before finishing runners-up at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals.
  • Sindhu will next compete at the USD 850,000 All England Championships, a Super 1000 event to be held from 17 to 21 March.

Twitter CEO auctions first tweet

  • The first ever tweet on the platform is up for sale after Twitter boss Jack Dorsey listed his famous post as a unique digital signature on a website for selling tweets as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
  • The post, sent from Dorsey's account in March of 2006, received offers that went as high as $88,888.88 within minutes after tweeting a link to the listing on 'Valuables by Cent' - a tweets marketplace.
  • Old offers for the tweet suggest that it was put for sale in December, but the listing gained more attention after Dorsey's tweet.
  • NFTs are digital files that serve as digital signatures to certify who owns photos, videos and other online media.
  • A tweet’s buyer will get an autographed digital certificate, signed using cryptography, that will include metadata of the original tweet.
