  • The Indian coal mining tycoon Gautam Adani has become Asia’s richest person thanks to a push into green energy that has boosted his fortune.
  • The 59-year-old mogul’s net worth reached $88.5 billion, eclipsing fellow countryman Mukesh Ambani’s $87.9 billion. With an almost $12 billion jump in his personal fortune, Adani is the world’s biggest wealth-gainer this year.
  • The coal magnate has increasingly looked beyond the fossil fuel for expansion. He’s moving into renewable energy, airports, data centers and defense contracting.

Actor Praveen Kumar Sobti passes away

  • Actor-athlete Praveen Kumar Sobti, best known for playing Bheem in the TV series “Mahabharat” and for winning an Asian Games gold medal, died following a cardiac arrest. He was 74.
  • Praveen represented the country across various athletic events in hammer and discus throw and even won four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals in 1966 and 1970.
  • The athlete gained further popularity after he began his acting career and featured as Bheem in BR Chopra's classic "Mahabharat" in 1988.

French President Macron on a diplomatic visit to Moscow

  • French President Emmanuel Macron flies to Moscow in bid to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to dial down tensions with Ukraine.
  • Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s borders. It denies planning an invasion, but says it could take unspecified military measures if its demands are not met.
  • The French president’s visit to Moscow and Ukraine comes less than three months before a presidential election at home.

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit appointed JNU Vice Chancellor

  • The ministry of education appointed Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
  • Pandit, a professor at the SavitribaiPhule Pune University, succeeds M Jagadesh Kumar who was appointed the chairman of the University Grants Commission last week.
  • Pandit, 59, is an alumna of JNU and she has an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from the School of International Studies.

Cyclone Batsirai slams into Madagascar

  • At least six people were killed after Cyclone Batsirai made landfall on Madagascar’s coast. The city of Nosy Varika is almost 95% destroyed.
  • Packing winds of 235 km/h (155mph), the cyclone struck the Mananjary district, more than 530 kilometers (310 miles) southeast of the capital Antananarivo.
  • Several hours after Batsirai made landfall, forecasters said the cyclone had weakened, with wind speeds dropping almost by half. But they warned that floods were still expected due to heavy rain.
