Bengali actor Monu Mukherjee passes away

  • Bengali actor Monu Mukherjee died in Kolkata following a cardiac arrest. He was 90.
  • Known for his brilliant performance, Monu Mukherjee had worked with many legendary directors including Satyajit Ray.
  • He started his career as a prompter and gradually started acting in theatres. His performance in ‘Kkhudha’ caught attention.
  • The senior actor made his debut with ‘Neel Akasher Niche’, directed by legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen. Over these years he has been a part of many films like, ‘Ashani Shanket’, ‘Ganashakti’, ‘Mrigaya’, ‘Patalghar’ and many others. He was also been a part of TV shows like ‘Poush Phaguner Pala’, and tele-films.

Joe Biden to select Xavier Becerra for health secretary

  • Joe Biden plans to nominate California attorney general Xavier Becerra for secretary of health and human services, which would add another Latino member to the president-elect's increasingly diverse cabinet.
  • During Becerra's 12 terms in the US Congress representing Los Angeles, he was an outspoken advocate of Latino rights and a vigorous defender of former president Barack Obama's signature health care program.
  • Becerra was elected as California attorney general in 2016, succeeding Vice President-elect Kamala Harris after she was elected to the US Senate. Becerra was the first Latino to hold that office.

Hampi stone chariot gets protective ring

  • Tourists can no longer get too close to the iconic stone chariot in front of the Vijaya Vittala Temple in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi. The architectural marvel has been cordoned off by a protective ring by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • The barrier aimed at preventing people from touching or climbing the monument, causing damage in any way. The stone chariot is one of the most visited monuments in Hampi and needs extra protection.
  • The protected monument is facing the risk of being damaged by objectionable behaviour of some of the tourists such as standing on the monument and touching it.
  • The chariot inside the temple complex is a shrine dedicated to Garuda, but the sculpture of Garuda is now missing.
  • The Hampi chariot is among three famous stone chariots in India, the other two being in Konark, Odisha, and Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.

Hall of fame tennis player Dennis Ralston passes away

  • Dennis Ralston, a five-time Grand Slam doubles champion who was a member of the sport’s Hall of Fame, died. He was 78.
  • As a singles player, Ralston lost to Spain’s Manuel Santana in three sets in the 1966 Wimbledon final. He reached the semi-finals at the 1960 U.S. national championships and the 1970 Australian Open.
  • He was considered the highest-ranked American player for three years in the 1960s, long before the sport’s computerised rankings system began.
  • He helped the U.S. win the Davis Cup title in 1963. He captained the team from 1972-75, including its 1972 win over Romania in the final.

SC allows foundation laying for new Parliament

  • The Supreme Court has allowed the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the new Parliament building after the government gave an undertaking to keep in abeyance construction or demolition of buildings and shifting of trees in the Central Vista area for now..
  • The court would be considering whether the project complied with land use and environmental regulations peculiar to the area which houses the Parliament and Central Secretariat buildings.
  • The government had defended its multi-crore Central Vista redevelopment plan, saying the existing Parliament building which is nearly a 100 years old is under tremendous pressure and not a brick of the heritage structures will be touched while constructing the new Parliament, Central Secretariat, and various Ministries.
