Insomnia symptoms linked to cardiovascular diseases

  • Less or troubled sleep can lead to stroke, heart attack or other cerebrovascular or cardiovascular diseases according to a study.
  • People who had all three symptoms of insomnia were 18 per cent more likely to develop heart diseases than people who did not have any symptoms.
  • The link between insomnia symptoms and these diseases was even stronger in younger adults and people who did not have high blood pressure at the start of the study.

Smriti Mandhana becomes second fastest Indian to score 2000 ODI runs

  • Smriti Mandhana has become the second fastest Indian to score 2,000 runs in one-day internationals.
  • The left-handed batter achieved the feat during the third and final ODI against West Indies played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, which India won by six wickets.
  • Mandhana has taken 51 innings to reach the 2,000-ODI run mark becoming the third-fastest woman after Belinda Clark and Meg Lanning to achieve the milestone.
  • Shikhar Dhawan is the only other Indian to hold the record score 2,000 runs in 50-overs cricket. He had reached the landmark in 48 innings, while Virat Kohli touched the mark in 53 innings.
  • Retired South African star batsman Hashim Amla is the fastest person to score 2000 ODI runs, which he had achieved in his 40th innings.

Indian hockey teams qualify for Olympics

  • Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams have secured berths in the summer Olympics that will be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
  • The men’s team thrashed Russia 7-1 to win the Olympic qualifiers whereas the Women’s team were handed a defeat of 1-4 by USA, but managed to qualify on aggregate score of 6-5.
  • This was the final chance for both the teams to secure Olympic quota after they failed to secure one in Asian games 2018.

Adi Mahotsav to be held in Delhi

  • Aadi mahotsav, a tribal themed cultural festival will be organised in New Delhi from November 16 to 30.
  • The concept of organising Aadi Mahotsav in major cities has proved to be  a boon for tribal artisans by eliminating the middle man and providing direct access to large markets.
  • The festival will be organised by TRIFED, a body of Ministry of Tribal Affairs, which undertakes measures to improve economic access to tribal artisans.

Maharashtra tops in justice delivery

  • Maharashtra has topped the list of India's first-ever ranking of states on justice delivery among the 18 large and mid-sized states.
  • Maharashtra is followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while among the small states Goa topped the list followed by Sikkim.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Bihar shared the last and second last spot among the 18 large and mid-sized states in the report.
  • India Justice Report (IJR) is prepared by Tata Trusts in collaboration with Centre for social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, Daksh, TISS-Prayas and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.
