Nipah outbreak in Kerala

  • The deadly Nipah virus has emerged once again in the state of Kerala after almost three years, killing a 12-year-old boy and infecting two health workers.
  • As per World Health Organisation, Nipah (NiV) is a zoonotic virus (it is transmitted from animals to humans) and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people.
  • In infected people, it causes a range of illnesses from asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis.
  • The virus can also cause severe disease in animals such as pigs, resulting in significant economic losses for farmers.

PM Modi inaugurates Shikshakparv

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 7, 2021 launched key initiatives in the education sector while speaking at ‘ShikshakParv 2021’ conclave.
  • ‘ShikshakParv 2021’ is being celebrated to honour the contribution of teachers, learning during pandemics, new initiatives under NEP 2020 among others.
  • The ShikshaParv is being celebrated by the Ministry of Education. The celebration started on September 5 and will continue till September 17 in recognition of the valuable contributions of teachers and to take New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 a step forward.

Belarusian protest leader sentenced for 11 years in prison

  • Maria Kolesnikova, one of the leaders of mass street protests against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko last year, was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
  • Ms. Kolesnikova was detained after she ripped up her passport to prevent Belarusian security forces from deporting her in a standoff at the Ukrainian border in September.
  • The musician-turned-politician became one of the faces of the mass opposition movement during the August 2020 presidential election, which the protesters said was rigged to extend Mr. Lukashenko’s grip on power.

Singapore trials patrol robots

  • Singapore has started trialling robots to patrol public areas and deter poor social behaviour in its latest effort to further augment its strong portfolio of surveillance tools.
  • The two patrol robots are equipped with cameras that can detect bad social behaviour and trigger real-time alerts to the command and control centre. The trial is taking place at an area with high foot traffic in central Singapore.
  • During the three-week trial, the robots would be used for surveillance and displaying messages to educate the public on proper behaviour.

Jasprit Bumrah becomes fastest Indian fast bowler to reach 100 Test wickets

  • Jasprit Bumrah became the quickest Indian fast bowler to take 100 Test wickets, achieving the feat in his 24th game, against England.
  • Bumrah surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev, who had taken 25 Tests to reach the 100-wicket mark in 1980.
  • He made his Test debut against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2018. Irfan Pathan took 28 Tests and Mohammad Shami 29 to get to their 100 Test wickets.
  • Bumrah is now 22nd on the list of highest wicket takers for India in Tests, the list being led by spin legend Anil Kumble.
