Maruti Suzuki shuts down Manesar plant

  • India's largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has said it would suspend production at its Gurugram and Manesar plants in Haryana for two days.
  • The automobile company has reported a 36 per cent year-on-year drop in sales in August, its steepest so far. 
  • Maruti Suzuki is by far the largest automobile manufacturer in India and its sales reflect the consumer behaviour up to large extent.

Gujarat government not to issue new permission for thermal power plants

  • Gujarat government announced that it will not give fresh permissions for setting up new thermal power stations in the state.
  • This is the first-of-its-kind move aimed at curbing the burning of fossil fuel for power generation.
  • The annual increase in power demand in the state will be met through non-conventional sources. The non-conventional source include solar, wind and hydro energy.

Vaishno Devi win Swachh Iconic Place award

  • Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir has been adjudged as the Best Swachh Iconic place in the country in the ‘Swachh Iconic Places’ list.
  • The 'Swachh Iconic Places' list is given by the Jal Shakti ministry under department of drinking water and sanitation.
  • The initiatives like water kiosks, reverse vending machines, installation of kill waste machine, collection and disposal of waste etc have contributed towards maintaining cleanliness and winning the award.

AFSPA extended for six more months in Assam

  • The Assam government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act by six more months in the entire state till February 2020.
  • The Act was imposed in Assam in 1990. In 2017, for the first time since the AFSP Act was imposed, the Centre transferred the power to extend or withdraw the Act to the state.
  • Apart from the state, the Act is in force in Nagaland and Manipur (except the Imphalmunicipal area) and in eight police station areas of Arunachal. It has been withdrawn from Meghalayain 2018 and from Tripura in 2015.
