Donald Trump signs executive order banning TikTok and Wechat

  • US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders banning popular Chinese apps like TikTok and WeChat, terming them a threat to the national security and to the country's economy.
  • India was the first country to ban TikTok and WeChat, citing national security concerns. India has banned as many as 106 Chinese apps, a move welcomed by both the Trump administration and the US lawmakers.
  • In a communique to the Congress, Trump said the spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by the companies in China continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the country.

Former Maharashtra CM Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar passes away

  • Senior Congressman and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar passed away in Pune. He was 88.
  • Mr. Patil Nilangekar, who hailed from Nilanga city in Latur district in the State’s Marathwada region, had the briefest run as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, serving in that capacity for less than a year.
  • Before its delimitation in 2008, Mr. Patil Nilangekar won the Nilanga Assembly constituency in consecutive Maharashtra Assembly elections from 1962 to 1980, and then held the ‘pocket borough’ again in the 1990, 1999 and 2004 Assembly polls.

Manoj Sinha takes oath as J&K lieutenant governor

  • Former Union minister Manoj Sinha was sworn-in as the new Lieutenant Governor(L-G) of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • He succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu who has now been appointed as the new Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG).
  • Sinha was former Minister of State for Railways and later and later held an independent charge of Ministry of Communication.
  • Sinha has been a member of the BJP national council from 1989 to 1996. He was elected to the Lower House for a third term in national politics when the BJP swept the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

Pradeep Kumar Joshi appointed UPSC chairman

  • Educationist Professor Pradeep Kumar Joshi has been appointed as the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Joshi is currently a member in the Commission. He will succeed Arvind Saxena who completes his term as UPSC chairman.
  • Joshi, who was the chairman of both Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commissions, joined the UPSC as a member in May 2015.
  • At present, Bhim Sain Bassi, Air Marshal A S Bhonsle (retired), Sujata Mehta, Manoj Soni, Smita Nagaraj, M Sathiyavathy Bharat Bhushan Vyas, TCA Anant and Rajiv Nayan Choubey are other members of the UPSC.

GC Murmu appointment Comptroller and Auditor General of India

  • Girish Chandra Murmu, who resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been appointed as the central government’s statutory auditor.
  • Murmu takes over as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) after Rajiv Mehrishi completed his term.
  • Mehrishi had served as the finance secretary and then as the home secretary at the Centre before his term as the CAG.
  • Murmu was appointed as the first Lt Governor of J&K when the union territory was carved out of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The CAG maintains oversight of the central government’s finances and points out flaws in procedures and actions that have financial implications.
