UK pledges $100 million for Ukraine

  • Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson has declared that the nation will donate an additional $100 million to the Ukrainian administration to help alleviate financial strains.
  • The money, worth roughly ? 760 crore, would be used to keep the Ukrainian government’s basic activities running.
  • This contribution might be used to fund public sector salaries, allowing key state activities to continue to function, as well as social safety nets and pensions for Ukrainians. The World Bank will be the source of the funding.

PM Modi inaugurates Pune metro

  • Prime minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Pune Metro Rail project in Maharashtra.
  • He inaugurated the 12–km stretch of the 32.2–km Pune Metro Rail Project, which is being built at a projected cost of ?11,400 crore and travelled 5 km on one of the lines.
  • Mr. Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Metro rail project in December 2016 just ahead of the 2017 Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls.

Ravichandran Ashwin becomes India’s second highest wicket-taker in Tests

  • Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev to become the second-highest Test wicket-taker in India after taking his 435th Test wicket in Mohali.
  • While Ashwin achieved the feat in his 85th match, Kapil Dev had managed it in 131 matches. He is now only behind legendary spinner Anil Kumble, who has 619 Test wickets to his name.
  • He also became the ninth highest Test wicket-taker of all time, moving past New Zealand great Richard Hadlee (431) and Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath (433) as well, apart from Kapil.

NSE MD Chitra Ramkrishna arrested by CBI

  • CBI arrested Chitra Ramkrishna, former CEO and MD of National Stock Exchange (NSE), in a 2018 case of bourse manipulation.
  • This is the second high-profile arrest in the case, with the agency arresting Anand Subramanian, NSE’s former group operating officer and Ramkrishna’s deputy and confidante.
  • The CBI action comes in the wake of allegations against Ramkrishna that she was sharing confidential information of the bourse with a “Himalayan Yogi” and had got Subramanian appointed in violation of rules.

Indian ambassador to Palestine passes away

  • Mukul Arya, India’s representative at the Palestinian city of Ramallah, has passed away under mysterious circumstances.
  • Arya, a 2008 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, was well regarded as an upcoming young diplomat.
  • He had previously served in Indian missions in Afghanistan and Russia. He also served at the Permanent Delegation of India to the UNESCO in Paris.
