Government invites bid for sale of BPCL

  • The government has invited bids for the sale of its entire 52.98% stake in the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
  • The Government of India is proposing strategic disinvestment of its entire shareholding in BPCL, which constitutes 52.98 per cent of BPCL’s equity share capital, along with transfer of management control.
  • The government has appointed Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP as its transaction advisor to advise on and manage the strategic disinvestment process.

Mark Meadows appointed new US chief of staff

  • President Donald Trump has announced a major staff overhaul, naming Rep. Mark Meadows as his new chief of staff and replacing Mick Mulvaney, who has been acting in the role for more than a year.
  • The decision comes as the Trump administration has faced criticism for its handling of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
  • Mulvaney had been leading the interagency response to the virus until Mr. Trump designated Vice President Mike Pence to lead the whole-of-government effort more than a week ago.

DMK general secretary Anbazhagan dies

  • Kalyanasundaram Anbazhagan, the last of the Dravidian stalwarts and general secretary of the DMK, died in Chennai. He was 97.
  • Popularly known as Perasiriyar (professor), Anbazhagan who had an M A degree in Tamil, was a close associate of late DMK president M Karunanidhi.

Goan Khola chilli gets GI tag

  • The Goa state government has obtained a Geographic Indication (GI) tag for the popular Khola chillies grown by the farmers association.
  • The state government now plans to pursue GI tags for Goa’s coconut vinegar, local rice varieties, mancurad mango, Harmal chillies, Mandoli bananas and other local produce.
  • Introduced by the Portuguese, the locally-grown Khola or Canacona chillies are unique owing to their brilliant red colour and medium-pungent taste.

Wasim Jaffer retires from all forms of cricket

  • Former India opener Wasim Jaffer announced retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing curtains on his illustrious career spanning over two decades.
  • The 42-year-old Jaffer has played 31 Tests and scored 1,944 runs with an average of 34.11. He has five hundreds and 11 fifties in the longest format, with 212 as his highest score.
  • The right-handed batsman played for Mumbai for most part of his career and then also represented Vidarbha. He is also the first player to play in 150 Ranji Trophy matches.
