Prof Jagadesh Kumar appointed chairman of UGC

  • JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • An IIT Madras alumnus, Prof Kumar’s term as JNU Vice-Chancellor ended on January 26, but he was asked to continue till a replacement was appointed.
  • The UGC chairman’s post has been lying vacant since December last year after Prof DP Singh resigned after turning 65.

India wins U-19 World Cup

  • India won a record-extending fifth U-19 World Cup title, beating England by four wickets in the final in Caribbean.
  • Having won the Under 19 Cricket World Cup in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018, India became the first team to win the tournament five times, two better than second-best Australia, who have won the tournament thrice.
  • Having finished runners-up in the last edition, losing a low-scoring thriller against Bangladesh, India bettered their performance and went all the way, finishing the tournament unbeaten with six wins out of six.

  • Eminent Odissi classical singer PanditDamodarHota passed away due to old age-related ailments. He was 87.
  • PanditHota was trained in Odissi classical music by his father GopinathHota. He later received training in Odissi and Hindustani classical music from Guru NrusinghanathaKhuntia.
  • Under scholarship from Odisha SangeetNatak Akademi, Hota also trained under PanditOmkarnath Thakur and PanditBalwantrai Bhatt.

Senegal wins Africa Cup of Nations

  • Senegal defeated Egypt in the final of Africa Cup of Nations championship, winning the continental championship for the first time on penalty kicks in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
  • Senegal had lost two finals previously, including at the last African Cup in Egypt in 2019.
  • Egypt won shootouts in the last 16 and the semifinals to get to the final but missed two penalties in Sunday's shootout.

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passes away

  • Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, known by the affectionate moniker ‘Nightingale of India’, passed away aged 92.
  • She was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan, third-highest civilian award in 1969, the Padma Vibhushan, second-highest civilian award in 1999 and the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 2001.
  • Much-feted throughout her lengthy innings, Ms. Mangeshkar was conferred with France’s highest civilian award ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ (Officer of the Legion of Honour) in 2009.
