Bitcoin falls to record low

  • Bitcoin slumped as much as 5% to its lowest since late September, tumbling under $41,000 amid a broader sell-off for cryptocurrencies.
  • The world’s biggest cryptocurrency has lost over 40% since hitting a record high of $69,000 in November and the volatility that has plagued it since its birth 13 years ago remains stubbornly present.
  • The global computing power of the bitcoin network has dropped sharply this week following the shutdown of Kazakhstan’s internet as an uprising hit the country’s fast-growing cryptocurrency mining industry.

Veteran Hollywood director Victor Bogdanovich passes away

  • Peter Bogdanovich, the highly influential and acclaimed director behind films such as “The Last Picture Show,” “Paper Moon,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and more, has died. He was 82.
  • His work on the screen has inspired numerous filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola and many more.
  • His breakout 1971 film “The Last Picture Show” was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and won two for supporting actors Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman.

SC allows OBC and EWS quota for medical entrance exams

  • The Supreme Court has allowed NEET 2021-2022 counselling to proceed while maintaining 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes and 10% for economically weaker sections.
  • The top court has also upheld the constitutional validity of 27% reservation for OBC in NEET All India Quota.
  • The criteria for EWS quota, including income limit of ? 8 lakh, will be followed for NEET 2021-22 admissions.

HAL’s Intermediate Jet Trainers clears major milestone

  • In an important milestone, the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for stage-II training of Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots, has successfully demonstrated the capability to carry out six turn spins.
  • With this, the HAL would have the entire range of trainer aircraft — HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft (BTA), the IJT, Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) and the Lead-in Fighter Trainer (LIFT) being conceptualised based on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas twin seat trainer aircraft.
  • The IJThad earlier completed demonstration of capabilities in terms of altitude and speed envelope, load factor, satisfactory stall characteristics and limited armament capability as required by the IAF.

Pratapsingh Rane accorded permanent cabinet position

  • Pratapsingh Rane, former Goa chief minister and Congress veteran, was accorded permanent status of a cabinet for his service to the coastal state.
  • The decision to accord him the honour was taken as Rane has completed 50 years as a legislator in the Goa Assembly during the current tenure.
  • Rane, also a former speaker, currently represents the Poriem Assembly segment as a Congress MLA. The 87-year-old MLA had been the longest-serving chief minister having had multiple terms till 2007 on different occasions.
