Running can reduce chances of early death

  • A new study has found that people who run as little as once a week have a lower risk of early death compared with people who don’t run at all.
  • Even a small amount of running was associated with a 27 percent lower risk of premature death.
  • However the study did not find any specific relation with respect to the intensity and duration of running. It did not conclude that more running increased more chances to avoid premature death.

IIT Madras launches standing wheelchair

  • Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, in collaboration with Phoenix Medical Systems, launched  India’s first indigenously-designed standing wheelchair.
  • The assistive device helps the wheelchair-bound move from a sitting to standing position, and vice-versa, independently.
  • The chair is named as 'Arise' and was developed through assistance from various governmentinstitutions as well as NGOs.

India- Uzbekistan joint military exercise

  • The first-ever India-Uzbekistan joint military exercise - Dustlik-2019 will begin at Chirchiq Training Area near Tashkent.
  • The exercise will enable sharing of best practices and experiences between the Armed Forces of the two countries especially in field of counter terrorism, which will lead to greater operational effectiveness.
  • India and Uzbekistan have also signed three Memoranda of Understanding in the fields of Military Medicine and Military Education.

Highest number of H1B visa denials for Indian IT companies

  • The denial rates for H-1B petitions have increased significantly from just six per cent in 2015 to 24 per cent in the third quarter of the current fiscal.
  • The research also found out that the denial is highest in case of Indian IT companies giving rise to speculations that Indian companies are being unduly targeted by the current administration.
  • The denial rate for H-1B petitions for continuing employment was also high for Indian IT companies.
  • It is accused that H1B visa restrictions, such as those now being implemented by the administration, push jobs outside the United States and lead to less innovation in America.

Mindtree CFO Pradeep Menon quits

  • Mindtree senior vice-president and CFO Pradip Menon has resigned from the firm after spending about 13 months with the firm.
  • Menon had joined Mindtree from AkzoNobel India. Prior to that he worked for over 20 years with Unilever in multiple roles in India, Singapore, Dubai and Switzerland.
  • Menon joined Mindtree after his predecessor Jagannathan Chakravarthi quit. Menon was part of the core team that oversaw the transition after L&T acquired 60.6% stake in Mindtree.
