Union minister Thawarchand Gehlot appointed Governor of Karnataka

  • The President has appointed eight new governors. The major reshuffle saw the appointment of Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot as the Karnataka Governor.
  • While Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot was appointed as the Governor of Karnataka, Bandaru Dattatreya was sent to Haryana.
  • Hari Babu Kambhampati will take over as the Governor of Mizoram. Mangubhai Chaganbhai Patel has been appointed as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Rajendran Vishwanath Arlekar has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh and PS Sreedharan Pillai has been moved to Goa.
  • Satyadev Narayan Arya is appointed as Governor of Tripura. Ramesh Bais transferred as Governor of Jharkhand.

Chinese astronauts complete first spacewalk

  • Chinese astronauts successfully performed the country’s first tandem spacewalk, working for seven hours on the outside of the new Tiangong station in orbit around the Earth.
  • Tiangong’s construction is a major step in China’s ambitious space programme, which has seen the nation land a rover on Mars and send probes to the Moon.
  • Three astronauts blasted off last month to become the station’s first crew, where they are to remain for three months in China’s longest crewed mission to date.
  • Their tasks involved elevating a panoramic camera outside the Tianhe core module, as well as testing the station’s robotic arm which will be used to transfer future modules around the station.

Manpreet Singh and MC Mary Kom to be Olympic flag bearers

  • Boxer MC Mary Kom and men's hockey team skipper Manpreet Singh will be India’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.
  • In a departure from tradition, India will have a male and a female bearer at the 2020 Games that open on July 23. The joint flagbearer role for teams is being given for the first time.
  • A six-time women's world champion, 38-year-old Kom won flyweight bronze at the 2012 Games in London and will hang up her gloves after Tokyo.
  • The men's hockey team won eight gold medals between 1928 and 1980 but have not been on the podium since winning in Moscow in 1980.
  • Wrestler Bajrang Punia, who is one of India's biggest medal hopes, will be the flagbearer at the closing ceremony on August 8.

Afghan troops flee to Tajikistan

  • More than 1,000 Afghan troops fled into neighbouring Tajikistan following clashes with the Taliban, as the insurgents amassed momentum on the battlefield.
  • The exodus of troops followed another weekend of fighting across much of the northern countryside where the Taliban have overrun dozens of districts.
  • Tajikistan’s national security committee said 1,037 Afghan government troops had fled into the country to save their livesafter clashes with the Taliban during the night.

CoWin made open source

  • The CoWin platform is being made open source and it will be available to any and all countries, Prime Minister Modi said.
  • Mr. Modi stressed that the conclave was the first step to introduce this platform to the global audience.
  • He said that through CoWin, India has administered 350 million doses of Covid vaccines, including nine million people in one day, few days ago.
  • CoWIN or the Covid Vaccine Intelligence Network, has been serving as the tech backbone of one of the largest vaccination programs in the world.
