Hip Hop musician Kanye West announces run for American Presidency

  • Hip-hop musician Kanye West announced that he would run for President of the United States this year. He would be pitted against incumbent President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
  • West has made similar announcements before. He had announced at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards that he would run for office in 2020. Last year again he said he would run for the presidency in 2024.
  • While there is no clear information on whether West has filed campaign papers, he would need to run on a third-party platform or as an independent if he is to follow through on his announcement. The deadline to run as an independent has not yet passed in many States.

Government bans website of Sikhs For Justice

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued orders for blocking 40 websites of the U.S.-based Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), which has been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
  • The ban orders came on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The outfit, which was banned by the MHA about a year ago, has been running an online campaign for recruiting supporters.
  • The move comes after the government designated nine more individuals as “terrorists” under the anti-terror law for their links to various separatist Khalistani groups.

All centrally controlled monuments to be opened

  • Government has decided to open all the Centrally protected monuments by completely abiding with safety protocols.
  • Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel has said, only those monuments and museums which are in the non-containment zones will be opened for visitors.
  • All Centrally protected monuments and sites will be bound by the protocols like sanitization, social distancing and other health protocols issued by the Health Ministry.

Pink ice inItalian Alps

  • Scientists in Italy are investigating the mysterious appearance of pink glacial ice in the Alps, caused by algae that accelerate the effects of climate change.
  • The plant, known as Ancylonemanordenskioeldii, is present in Greenland's so-called Dark Zone, where the ice is also melting.
  • Normally ice reflects more than 80% of the sun's radiation back into the atmosphere, but as algae appear, they darken the ice so that it absorbs the heat and melts more quickly.

Covaxin trials begin in Belagavi

  • Covaxin, the first possible vaccine against COVID-19, will be tested on a team of around 200 healthy volunteers in and around Belagavi.
  • The clinical trials will be conducted by doctors and staff members of Jeevan Rekha, a multi-specialty hospital, monitored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Bharat Biotech International Ltd., the private company that has developed the chemical molecule.
  • While a vaccine trial usually takes around three months, the COVID-19 vaccine trial was being put on the fast track. The ICMR has announced that the drug could be recommended for general usage after the second week of August.
