  • Researchers from the marine research organization ProMare along with IBM built the world’s first AI ship, the ‘Mayflower 400
  • The ship is to study marine pollution and analyze plastics in water. The voyage is important because more than 80% of the underwater world remains unexplored.
  • The ship has been trained through Artificial intelligence The training will help the ship to detect the presence of marine animals and thereby provide information about the population distribution of these animals in the ocean.

Third wave of Covid-19 inevitable

  • The government has announced that a third wave of Covid-19 was inevitable looking at the current surge in infections.
  • Researchers have found that the circulation of the UK variant (B.1.1.7) that is known to be 50% more transmissible is on a decline in India, and the double mutant variant (B.1.6.1.7) is on the rise.
  • Scientists were currently making a map in the laboratory of all possible changes that could happen to the virus and see how these changes could affect immune and vaccine evasion.

Election commission defers by-polls

  • The Election Commission of India deferred by-election’s to three Parliamentary and eight Assembly seats due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
  • Three Parliamentary constituencies, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, are vacant. Many assembly constituency across different states are also vacant.
  • As per the provisions of Section 151A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the vacancies are required to be filled, through by-elections within six months from the date of occurrence of vacancy.

Monsoon could make on time arrival over Kerala

  • The Southwest monsoon will most likely hit Kerala on time, according to the Extended Range Forecast (ERF) released by the India Meteorological Department.
  • The normal date for the monsoon onset over Kerala is June 1. About 70 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall is recorded between June to September.
  • The IMD is slated to release the second stage monsoon Long Range Forecast (LRF) on May 15. The agency will share the precise date of arrival of the monsoon over the Andaman Sea and its progress over to mainland India.

  • Former Union minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh passed awayafter he was tested positive for Covid-19. He was 82.
  • Son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, Ajit Singh was a seven-time Parliament member from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Singh served as Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Agriculture, and Food Processing Industries in different governments.
  • He had served in the governments of VP Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh.
