Malayalam actor P Balachandran passes away

  • P. Balachandran, Malayalam actor, playwright, and author has passed away at the age of 62. He will be remembered for his contribution to Malayalam cinema and literature.
  • He started off his acting career with Richard Attenborough’s landmark 1982 film Gandhi as an extra. He also appeared in films like Trivandrum Lodge, Thank You, Silence among others.
  • He wrote the scripts of Uncle Bun, Kallu Kondoru Pennu, Police and so on. In 2012, he directed Ivan Megharoopan, based on the life of poet t P. Kunhiraman Nair.

LG to shut down its smartphone business

  • South Korea’s LG Electronics is closing its mobile business unit after nearly six years of losses totalling $4.5 billion. The move makes it the first major smartphone brand to withdraw from the market.
  • LG said the mobile phone business will wind down by July 31, although inventory of some existing models may still be available post that.
  • LG’s exit would present an opportunity to Apple and Samsung to gain more customers, especially in the US where LG’s market share was 9% in December 2020.

Amboli in Maharashtra named Biodiversity heritage site

  • The Maharashtra government has declared an area at Amboli in Western Ghats in Sindhudurg district as a biodiversity heritage site.
  • The decision to declare the area as the bio-diversity heritage site is taken because of discovery of rare fish species.
  • Earlier, the State government had declared the Glory of Allapalli in Gadchiroli district, Landor Khori Park in Jalgaon, Ganesh Khind in Pune, myristica swamp vegetation in Sindhudurg district as biodiversity heritage sites.

March becomes third warmest in 121 years

  • India recorded its third warmest March in 121 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated in its monthly report.
  • The monthly maximum temperature recorded over the country last month was 32.65 degrees Celsius versus a normal of 31.24 degrees, making March 2021 also the warmest since 2011 over the country.
  • The minimum and mean temperatures recorded over India last month were also above normal. The overall increase in temperatures was observed on a day-to-day basis and was not due to any particular weather.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh resigns

  • Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has resigned from his position. He belongs to Nationalist Congress Party under the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government.
  • The development came shortly after the Bombay High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to start a preliminary inquiry within 15 days into allegations of corruption and misconduct.
  • Dilip Walse Patil, a former Speaker and seven-time MLA, is expected to take charge of the Home Ministry.
