India has submitted its bid documents for hosting the AFC Asian Cup in 2027. If India wins the bid, it will be the first time the country will host the continental showpiece.
The AFC is expected to announce the host early next year. Saudi Arabia, which has never hosted the tournament, had already announced its bid. South Korea is likely to join the race. China will host the 2023 tournament.
India had featured four times in the AFC Asian Cup and their best performance was a runners-up finish in 1964 when it was a round-robin tournament without a final and competed among just four teams.
Veteran journalist BR Jaitely (85), with a career in journalism that spanned five decades, passed away after a prolonged illness.
Jaitlely, who worked for The Indian Express for 16 years, was also the founding editor-in-chief of a Hindi daily ‘Divya Himachal’.
Along with being a war correspondent, he had interest in anthropology, philosophy, religion, politics, and above all, history. He diversified into writing in the last decade of his life and penned two books, The Road To Takshashila and The Pick Of The Pen.
M.K. Arjunan, the last of the composers from the golden period of Malayalam cinema, died at Kochi. He was 84.
In an illustrious career spanning over five decades, Arjunan scored music for more than 500 songs in over 200 Malayalam films. He also worked extensively in plays.
Arjunan made his debut as a composer in Karuthapurnami in 1968. He was known for his association with lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi, with whom he composed the music for nearly 50 films, emerging as the most prolific composer-lyricist partnership in Malayalam film industry.
Ukrainian firefighters are trying to put out two forest blazes in the area around the Chernobyl nuclear power station, which was evacuated because of radioactive contamination after the 1986 explosion at the plant.
Authorities said radiation levels at the fire were substantially higher than normal. But the emergencies service said radiation levels in the capital of Kyiv, about 100 kilometres south, were within norms.
The fires were within the 2,600-square-kilometer Chernobyl Exclusion Zone established after the 1986 disaster at the plant that sent a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe.
