India offers world’s cheapest mobile data: Report

  • According to recently released report by price comparison site Cable.co.uk, India has cheapest mobile data rates in the world.
  • The global average rate of data was US $8.53 (around Rs. 600) for 1GB. In India it is just Rs. 18.5(USD 0.26). In United Kingdom it is US $12.37.
  • India is followed by Kyrgyzstan ($0.27 per GB), Kazakhstan ($0.49), Ukraine ($0.51) and Rwanda ($0.56).
  • The findings of report was based on comparison of 6313 mobile data plans in 230 countries.
  • India is second largest smartphone market in world after China with over 4.30 million smartphone users.

Odisha Government launches Mukhya Mantri Karigar Sahayata Scheme

  • Odisha Government launched Mukhya Mantri Karigar Sahayata Scheme to provide financial assistance to craftsmen.
  • Under it, craftsmen with 10 years of experience and having annual income below Rs.1 lakh will get assistance of Rs.800 per month.
  • Craftsmen above 80 years of age having same experience and annual income as above will get Rs.1000 per month allowance.
  • Beneficiaries will be selected by selection committee constituted in every district under collectors of the respective districts.
  • To avail benefits under, beneficiaries are required to submit of annual income certificate, residence proof, experience certificate and age proof.

1,000-MW thermal power project inaugurated at Thoothukudi

  • National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NPTC’s) 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired thermal power project was inaugurated at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
  • This project is joint venture between NLCIL (eyveli Lignite Corporation Limited) and TANGEDCO with an equity participation of 89:11.
  • NTPC is the largest power company in India with an electric power generating capacity of 53,651 MW. It is Navratna CPSU.
  • Its core business is generation and sale of electricity to state-owned power distribution companies and State Electricity Boards in India.
  • It was founded in 1975 and is headquaterd in New Delhi. Central Government holds 64.74% of its equity shares in NTPC.

Cricket included in Asian Games

  • General Assembly of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has decided to include cricket in the sports programme in 2022 Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China.
  • The last time cricket featured in Asian Games was in 2010 and 2014 edition as medal sport. During both times India had opted out citing reason of hectic schedule. Cricket was left out from 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in Indonesia.
  • In 2010 and 2014 editions of Asian Games saw, cricket was played in twenty-20 format. This format is likely to continue during 2022 Asian Games in China.

Abhinandan Varthaman awarded 1st Bhagwan Mahavir Ahimsa Puraskar

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was awarded with first ‘Bhagwan Mahavir Ahimsa Puraskar’.
  • It will be presented to him on 17th April 2019 i.e. on Mahavir Jayanti, celebrated on birth of Mahaveer, 24th and last Tirthankara of Avasarpini.
  • The award has been instituted by Akhil Bharatiya Digambar Jain Mahasamiti. It carries cash prize of Rs 2.51 lakh, a memento and a citation.
  • In ongoing India-Pakistan standoff after Pulwama terror attack, Varthaman was held for three days under captivity in Pakistan after his Mig-21 Bison aircraft was shot down in aerial dogfight.
  • He was forced to eject and landed across Line of Control (LoC). He was captured by Pakistan forces soon after and was released on March 1, 2019.

Assam Government bans molasses

  • Assam Government has recently ordered complete ban on production of molasses in all districts of state.
  • This decision comes recent hooch tragedy in two districts - Golaghat and Jorhat – of states which claimed 158 lives.
  • Molasses is important component in making "sulai", an intoxicating drink widely consumed by locals in tea garden areas of the state.
  • State government also has decided to generate awareness in all tea gardens and their periphery areas to make people aware of the evils of consuming sulai.
